Last Time Out
Asheville wrapped up play in the Coke Zero Sugar Classic multi-team event hosted by Chattanooga on Thursday night, mounting a 12-0 run in the last 4:32 of the game to top Tennessee Tech 61-55. Asheville's perimeter defense was stifling in the win, holding the Golden Eagles to 0-for-21 shooting from 3-point range while forcing 21 turnovers. The Bulldogs parlayed the turnovers into 27 points, getting 53 points from its starters in the win.
Pember Producing
Newcomer Drew Pember has wasted little time fitting into the Bulldogs' lineup, starting all four games with a team-leading 10.8 points per contest and league-leading 4.0 blocks per game. A junior transfer from the University of Tennessee, Pember has been a force defensively, swatting seven shots in the win over Tennessee Tech. A 6-10 forward who can knock down the three, Pember gives Asheville four players that hail from the Knoxville region (Stephney, Tajion Jones, BJ Marable), including fellow high-school teammate Trent Stephney. The quartet combined for 40 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals in the win over Tennessee Tech.
Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina boasts an overall record of 3-2, falling to No. 6 Purdue (94-83) on Saturday and No. 17 Tennessee (89-72) on Sunday afternoon. The teams played in Uncasville, Connecticut, as part of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off. Both Purdue and Tennessee have moved up in the AP Top 25 Poll since the weekend, sitting at No. 3 and No. 15, respectively. Scoring has not been an issue for the Tar Heels, boasting a lineup with five players that average 11 or more points per game. Sophomore guard Caleb Love is scoring 17.4 points per contest, while Junior Armando Bacot is nearly averaging a double-double (14.4 ppg, 9.0 rpg), totaling 16 points and 12 rebounds against Tennessee. North Carolina is plus 5.4 in rebounding margin, but minus 3.6 in the turnover battle.
Coach Davis
The Tar Heels are guided by first-year head coach and North Carolina (1992) alum Hubert Davis. Davis took over for Tar Heel legend Roy Williams after his retirement (2020-21), coaching on his staff for the previous nine seasons.
Series History
The two sides have met eight times over the years, with North Carolina claiming all eight matchups. In Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels are 6-0 all-time. The two teams last met 10 years ago when North Carolina visited Asheville for the official opening of Kimmel Arena, topping the Bulldogs 91-73.
