Volleyball wraps up its season on the road at High Point and North Carolina A&T

11.11.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will close out its 2021 season this weekend with a pair of matches on the road. First, the Bulldogs will take on league-leading High Point Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville posted a 1-1 record last weekend during its final homestand of the season. The Bulldogs edged out Hampton in five sets (26-24, 25-23, 15-25, 26-28, 15-9) Friday but dropped a three-set decision to Campbell (25-9, 25-21, 25-23) on Saturday. With last weekend's results, the Bulldogs are 6-17 overall, and 4-10 in Big South play this fall.

Senior Salvo – The two matches this weekend will be the final ones for the team's six seniors in a Bulldog uniform: Anna Skryd, Peyton McClinton, Molly Hackett, Hannah Spicer, Camilly Cristiny, and Grace Volk. These six have notched several awards athletically, academically and have been a part of 43 victories during their time with the program.

Bulldogs bolstered on the block – Asheville has gone 2-3 in its last five matches, and a critical reason why has been its work upfront. The Bulldogs are averaging 2.62 blocks per set during that stretch compared to 1.67 for the opposition. Furthermore, the tandem of Nina Finderle (1.15 B/S) and Lexy Cole (1.33 B/S) have played significant roles in that recent success on the block.

Kishbaugh notches another double-double – Freshman Brandy Kishbaugh brings a three-match double-double streak into Friday's contest with High Point. Overall, Kishbaugh has 184 assists and 180 digs during her first season as a Bulldog, which ranks second and third on the team, respectively.

About the Opponents – High Point enters the regular season's final weekend, controlling its destiny in repeating as Big South Regular Season Champions. HPU is 21-6 overall and 13-1 in conference matches this fall, which sits slightly ahead of Campbell's 12-2 mark against Big South competition. If the Panthers can clinch the regular-season crown, it'll mark their fourth league title in the past five seasons.

North Carolina A&T, meanwhile, has enjoyed quite a bit of success in its first season as a member of the Big South. The Aggies, who are 17-9 overall and 9-5 in league action during their inaugural season in the conference, are a balanced team ranking second in the Big South in both hitting percentage (.218) and blocks per set (2.39).

Series Rewind vs. High Point, North Carolina A&T – Historically, Asheville has had success against both High Point and North Carolina A&T.  Against High Point, the Bulldogs are 32-18, but the Panthers have won the last eight meetings. As for the North Carolina A&T series, Asheville is 17-4 against the Aggies. North Carolina A&T did get the better of the Bulldogs in a five-set thriller earlier this season at the Justice Center.
