Volleyball heads to USC Upstate for a midweek matchup

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will hit the road on Tuesday for a midweek Big South matchup at USC Upstate. The match, which can be seen on ESPN+, is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
Last Time Out – Asheville posted a 1-1 record last weekend at home. The Bulldogs swept Gardner-Webb (25-20, 25-15, 25-19) but dropped a four-set decision to Winthrop (25-16, 25-14, 14-25, 25-14). With those results, Asheville's overall record stands at 4-11 and 2-4 in Big South play.
Complete Win vs. Gardner-Webb – The Bulldogs put together arguably their most complete effort of the season in Friday's win over Gardner-Webb. Asheville not only established a new season-high block total with 12, but it also posted a season-best hitting percentage of .302. It marked the first time the Bulldogs had logged a team hitting percentage better than .300 in a match since November 8, 2019, when it attacked at a .315 clip against Gardner-Webb.
Fine Day from Finderle – A significant reason for Asheville's success upfront in Friday's win was the play of Nina Finderle. Finderle played a part in seven blocks (one solo, six block assists) in that contest, which was tied for the second-most ever by a Bulldog in a three-set match.
Offense stepping up in conference – Asheville's offense has started to find its rhythm now that the team has entered its conference schedule. Through six league matches, the Bulldogs are hitting .228, which ranks second in the conference behind only High Point's .265 mark.
Senior setting it up – Setting up Asheville's improved offense has been senior Grace Volk. Volk has racked up 208 assists (9.45 A/S) so far during the conference season. Only Charleston Southern's Emma Minnick (219, 9.52 A/S) has logged more assists in league matches than Volk among Big South setters.
Terrific Tandem – A key cog in Asheville's attack has been the tandem of Peyton McClinton and Molly Hackett. Both Hackett (3.19 K/S) and McClinton (3.12 K/S) are averaging more than three kills per set this season and rank in the top six among Big South players in that category. Charleston Southern is the only other team in the conference, with multiple players averaging more than three kills per set.
About USC Upstate – The Spartans, who are 8-11 overall and 4-2 in league play, have been playing well lately as they have won five of their last six matches. Upstate boasts an offense that has several options as it has five different players that have scored at least 100 points this fall.
Series Rewind vs. USC Upstate – Historically, the Bulldogs have held the edge against Upstate, winning 11 of the 18 all-time meetings. However, the Spartans knocked off Asheville twice earlier this year in the spring season by identical 3-0 scores.
