Bulldogs fall at USC Upstate in three
10.12.2021 | Women's Volleyball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in three sets on the road to USC Upstate (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) Tuesday evening in Big South action.
Stat Standouts – Asheville's offense was led Tuesday by senior Peyton McClinton with a team-high 13 kills. In addition to her offensive numbers, McClinton also led the Bulldogs with 11 digs to tally her sixth double-double of the season. Asheville registered 12 blocks in the three-set affair, with Nina Finderle playing a part in five of those with one solo and four block assists.
Set 1 – Asheville jumped on the Spartans to begin Tuesday's match scoring nine of the first 13 points. Upstate, which brought a four-match winning streak into this contest, quickly mounted a rally and forced Asheville to take a timeout. Neither offense had an issue scoring as the Bulldogs and Spartans attacked at .320 and .323 clips, respectively. However, the turning point occurred after a kill from McClinton made the score 20-19 Spartans. After that kill, Upstate closed the first frame on a 5-0 run to finish a 25-19 victory.
Set 2 – After taking a 1-0 lead, the Spartan offense continued to click in the second. Despite not attacking as efficiently as it did initially, Upstate matched its kill total from the first with 15 to go along with four blocks. McClinton had four kills, and Kat Cruser also chipped in two, but it was not enough as the Spartans took the second, 25-19.
Set 3 – The Bulldog offense struggled to get things clicking in what proved to be the final set. Asheville committed more attack errors (eight) than it had kills (seven) in the third. Upstate did not have quite the offensive success it did in the first two sets, but it did receive a boost from four aces to help the cause and finish off Tuesday's match, 25-17.
Next Up – Asheville will return to the court on Saturday when it visits Radford in another Big South tilt. The start time for that match is scheduled for 2 p.m., and it can be seen on ESPN+.
