10.16.2021 | Women's Volleyball
RADFORD, Va. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set decision on the road at Radford (25-16, 25-20, 25-21) on Saturday.
Stat Standouts – Offensively, Kat Cruser led the way for the Bulldogs tallying six kills in the contest. Defensively, Nina Finderle paced Asheville upfront with a solo block and five block assists. The tandem of Anna Skryd and Peyton McClinton chipped in nine digs apiece to help the cause as well.
Set 1 – There was not a ton of separation between Radford and UNC Asheville early in Saturday's match. The sudden change of momentum occurred with the score knotted at 12. Following that point, the Highlanders went on to score 13 of the following 17 points to gain the first sizable lead of the match and eventually take the first frame, 25-16.
Set 2 – The second set was a bit more of a back-and-forth one as there were nine tied scores and five lead changes. In what proved to be the final lead change of the set, the Highlanders went on a 3-0 run to give them a 16-13 lead. Asheville kept battling, and Radford's lead was still at three at 24-21 before a Highlander kill finished off the second frame, 25-21.
Set 3 – Asheville put together its most complete effort in what proved to be the final frame of Saturday's match. The Bulldog offense racked up 10 kills, and the defense added four blocks to help the cause. Radford still held the lead in the late stages, even with the offense and defense providing a boost. However, a kill from Cruser closed the gap to just one point at 20-19. Like it had throughout the match, Radford was able to put together a nice run to close out the match, 25-20, thanks to a 5-1 run.
Next Up – Asheville will return home next Friday and Saturday when it welcomes Charleston Southern and Presbyterian to the Justice Center for a pair of Big South contests. The start times for those matches are set for 6 and 2 p.m., respectively.
