ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will return home to the Justice Center this weekend for a pair of Big South matches against Charleston Southern on Friday and Presbyterian on Saturday. The start times for these matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, and both can be seen on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville fell in a three-set decision on the road at Radford last Saturday (25-16, 25-21, 25-20). With the loss, the Bulldogs' overall record moved to 4-13, and its Big South mark dipped to 2-6.
Strong Play from a Pair of Bulldogs – Asheville has received a significant boost from two players recently. First, Peyton McClinton has totaled a team-high 59 kills (3.47 K/S) to go with 40 digs (2.35 D/S) in the team's last five matches. Nina Finderle, meanwhile, paces all Bulldog blockers with 22 denials (1.38 B/S) and hitting percentage (.325) during the same stretch.
Ready for Home Cooking – The Bulldogs, who have played 13 of their 17 matches this season away from home, hope this two-match homestand will bring some positive results. In limited action playing at home so far, the Bulldogs have posted better numbers in nearly every statistical category, including kills per set (9.54 to 10.93), attack percentage (.142 to .192, and digs per set (12.75 to 13.13).
Push for the Postseason – As we near the end of October, the Bulldogs and the rest of the Big South schools are jostling to get into the top six spots in the league standings to clinch a spot for the upcoming conference tournament. With four weekends of play remaining, Asheville is tied for eighth place in the league standings with its opponent Friday Charleston Southern. Both the Bulldogs and Buccaneers are two matches behind Gardner-Webb for the coveted sixth and final spot.
About the Opponents – As mentioned earlier, Charleston Southern is tied with Asheville with their identical 2-6 Big South records. A player to watch for CSU Friday evening will be Peyton Thompson, who currently leads all players in the conference averaging 3.47 kills per set.
Presbyterian, meanwhile, will be aiming to snap a three-match losing skid this weekend. PC, which is 8-11 overall and 3-6 in conference action in 2021, boasts one of the stingiest defenses in the conference holding opponents to a league-low .155 hitting percentage.
Series Rewind vs. Opponents – The Bulldogs have held the edge historically against both Charleston Southern and Presbyterian. Asheville is 42-17 all-time against CSU, including a 20-6 mark in matches contested on the Bulldogs' home floor. As for the PC series, the Bulldogs are 20-7 against the Blue Hose, with two of those victories coming earlier this year during the spring season.
Admission & CoVID Protocols - Admission to both matches this weekend will be free! The same will be true for the remainder of the team's 2021 schedule. The concession stand will be closed, but we will have food trucks (Blessed Soul – Friday and Ciao Y'all - Saturday) in attendance. Due to the prevalence of CoVID-19 in the greater Buncombe County area, UNC Asheville Athletics is asking spectators to abide by the following:
