ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team defeated Western Carolina by a score of 70-59 in Honey Brown's first game as the program's Head Coach Wednesday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. It marks the second straight season the Bulldogs have won their season opener.
Asheville jumped on the Catamounts early, connecting on a pair of three-pointers from Tamiah Lewis and Kai Carter to stake the Bulldogs to an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. UNC Asheville would keep its offense rolling as it extended its advantage to as many as nine points in the opening frame, 16-7. WCU would trim the deficit a bit before the end of the quarter, but Asheville still held a 19-13 advantage after one.
The second quarter was much tighter than the first. Asheville shot an efficient 7-of-9 from the floor, but a combination of six Bulldog turnovers and four offensive rebounds by Western Carolina allowed the latter to keep pace. The two teams went to the locker room with the score being 37-29 in the Bulldogs' favor.
At the beginning of the third quarter, it looked like the Bulldogs may run away with things as they led by 15 points, 46-31, with 6:21 to go in the third quarter. After that point, the Catamounts were able to reduce the gap considerably heading into the fourth. After trailing by double figures, WCU was down by just six points, 48-42, after three quarters.
After not connecting on a field goal for the last half of the third quarter, Asheville had its shooting touch return in the final frame. Carter knocked down a pair of three-pointers to get things rolling, followed by field goals from Nadiria Evans and Faith Adams quickly built the Bulldog lead back to double figures. However, this time, the Catamounts ran out of time to attempt another comeback and eventually fell by a 70-59 final score.
Individually, Evans led the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field. Carter finished with a career-high 18 points thanks in part to four three-pointers to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Senior Amaryah Corpening also scored in double figures with 13 points to go with six assists to facilitate the offense.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday when they make the short trip to Boone, North Carolina, to take on Appalachian State. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
