ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season to take on Appalachian State on Sunday. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Mountaineers is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game can be watched on ESPN+.
Win Number One - For the second straight year, the Bulldogs came away with a victory in their season-opener as they knocked off Western Carolina, 70-59, on Wednesday at Kimmel Arena. The win also marked the first for new Head Coach Honey Brown in her first game.
Stats on a Senior - Senior Nadiria Evans showed why she was named to the Preseason All-Big South First Team early this month with her performance against Western Carolina. The Gainesville, Florida native scored a team-high 22 points on an 8-for-14 effort from the floor to help lead her team to victory. It marked the tenth time that Evans has scored 20 or more points in a game during her time with the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Shoutout - Another primary reason why the Bulldogs knocked off Catamounts was the play of sophomore Kai Carter. Carter scored a career-high 18 points, which included four three-pointers. Carter also added five rebounds and three steals to help the cause.
Defense is Key - In Wednesday's win over the Catamounts, Asheville held WCU to 59 points. This continues the trend of defensive turning into Bulldog wins that began last season. Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, the Bulldogs are 15-3 when opponents score 60 points or fewer.
About the Opponent - Like Asheville, Appalachian State started its 2020-21 season with a win as it defeated Charlotte, 74-68. The Mountaineers had five players score in double figures, including Pre Stanley, who paced all scorers with 20 points.
Series Rewind - The Bulldogs and Mountaineers have matched up a total of 18 times since the early 1970s. Appalachian State has won 14 of the 18 meetings, but the two teams have split the last two. The last game between the two programs occurred in the opening round of the 2019 WBI Tournament, where Appalachian State came away with a 57-55 win at Kimmel Arena. The Bulldogs will be looking for their first win in Boone since the 2000-01 season on Sunday.
