Bulldogs Take Down UNC Greensboro in Dramatic Fashion

ASHEVILLE – With UNC Asheville's women's tennis team leading in the match 3-2 on the precipice of the first victory against UNC Greensboro in head coach Lise Gregory's tenure, a freshman stepped up in a clutch situation to deliver a 4-3 victory for the Bulldogs, Sunday evening at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Rosie Dickson, playing at No. 5 singles, won her first set against Ariana Chan, 6-1. The second set was much more of a back and forth affair as both competitors put it all on the line. Dickson, however, emerged victorious in the second set, 7-5, earning a mobbing of hugs from her teammates who had already finished play.
Dickson's victory made the score 4-2 for the Bulldogs (2-0). Another critical result came in the first three singles matches, as senior Emily Sidor secured a victory at No. 3 singles with a pair of hard-fought sets against Hanna Giddings. She took the first, 6-4, and the second, 7-5. Her victory put the Bulldogs in prime position to win, giving them a 3-1 lead with three singles matches left to go.
The Bulldogs started the match by earning the doubles point. Sidor and Lauren Watson-Steele took down Brianna Gomez and Tayah Cross, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles, while Ami Grace Dougah and Brianna Taranto defeated Chan and Sophia Adams, 6-3.
Dougah followed up her doubles performance with a singles victory, as she beat Adams, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot.
The Bulldogs will have a little more than a week off before returning to action at the Asheville Racquet Club against Mars Hill with a 1 p.m. match, Tuesday, February 4.
"We've had a lot of close matches with UNCG, but we've never beaten them. I knew we were capable of it, so it was kind of nice to see that I'm not crazy. The coolest thing about watching that was, one: the support we had. I think we had like 80 people here and that made a huge difference. And then secondly, how well we competed. Even Lize who started just her second match since April: she didn't play in the fall since she was injured. She struggled in the beginning, but she hung on and she competed, and she had a chance she could've won that match. (Dougah) played a really good match and competed really, really well. Em (Sidor) at three was critical. Emily is just sort of a grinder and a competitor, and she just finds a way to get it done. And she did it and that was huge. Winning that one at three was really, really important. And then of course Rosie's (Dickson) match. Rosie is capable of a lot, and it was nice to see her doing it. 'You're capable of this, you have a ton of potential,' there, we got to see what she's capable of. That was really nice. I'm just really happy for them.
