Three Bulldogs Earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Three UNC Asheville Women's Tennis players earned Academic All-District® honors from College Sports Communicators, announced by the organization today (Tuesday, May 12).

Senior Valeria Centeno, junior Angelina Joy Hug and senior Avery Sager each earned the honor for the Bulldogs. To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore both athletically and academically, maintain a cumulative 3.5 grade point average and also play in 70 percent of team contests that include team scores.

Centeno went 11-6 in singles play including one win in conference. She earned all 11 singles wins at No. 6. Centeno also went 9-9 in at No. 2 doubles play with Isabella Moss, earning one conference win. In the classroom, she graduated with a 3.77 grade point average and a bachelor's degree in business with a minor in Spanish.

This is Centeno's third career Academic All-District selection. She is a native of Hialeah, Fla.

Hug posted a team-high 14 wins in singles play at No. 1 including 2-1 in conference. She also posted nine wins in doubles play at No. 1 with Sofia Segui, going 2-0 in conference. Se was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week on Mar. 18, and was also a First Team All-Conference in both singles and doubles, teaming up with Segui. Hug was also named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team. Academically, she graduated with a 3.92 grade point average and a bachelor's degree in health and wellness promotion.

This is Hug's second career Academic All-District selection. She is a native or Murten, Switzerland.

Sager won nine matches including two in conference in singles play, earning all nine wins at No. 3 singles. Sager also won six matches at No. 3 doubles with Maria Sol Alvarez Brandon. Academically, she graduated with a 3.81 grade point average and a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in legal studies.

This is Sager's third career Academic All-District selection. She is a native of Waxhaw, N.C.

"Our seniors led the way on the court and in the classroom this year!" said head coach Jeff Maren. "We are so proud of all that they have accomplished! Ang, Val, and Avery represented our program well and I have no doubt that we will continue to be proud of their future accomplishments in life!"
