Bulldogs Fall to Catamounts at Greenwood Field

09.18.2019 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's women's soccer team fell, 2-0, to the Catamounts Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Western Carolina opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game off of a header by Emily Zipay with the assist going to Julia Winter on the corner kick. The Catamounts then found the back of the net again in minute eight off the foot of Jordan Dawsey.

UNC Asheville held the Catamount offense there as Western Carolina could not get another goal past the Bulldog defense. The Bulldogs allowed Western Carolina to take only 10 shots in the match, with only three of those being in the second half.

The Bulldogs took six shots in the match, with four being on goal that were all saved by the Catamount goalkeeper.

Cliff Notes
"At the end of the day, it's about these players," head coach Clifton Bush said. "These young women are learning some things as we have seen a lot of build individually. Alice Walker has taken her game to the next level, Skyler Chillson has taken her game to the next level and the speed and pace that they work has shown. Now you have a young player like Isabella Piso coming up and looking at those players saying that's what I need to do and that's how I need to battle. Overall we have just had such a good core of players stepping up their game. I mean I could go down the list. At the end of the day everything has been anchored by our two Graces (Grace Kwiatkowski and Grace Sloan). They have stuck this team through and grit and grinded every single day. They have been willing to work and they are the foundation of what we are doing."

On a tough nonconference schedule that the Bulldogs have faced:
"We have to learn that we have to execute and make the mistake only once," Bush said. "We need to use those mistakes as a learning experience to guide us into the conference season.  We have had a tough nonconference schedule, but you're not going to find a nonconference schedule that is going to be all cake and sunshine. At the end of the day this is going to prepare us. I think we got an early victory where we thought we were something that we hadn't quite earned yet."

"We have had a run of results that show us that we have to earn it from the effort and the energy and fight. That us where we have to start and that's the identity that we have to be about. I think we have seen over the last two games, against a very quality Davidson and a very quality Western Carolina, that people like to get after you. That's going to match what we have to play in the upcoming conference season. We're going to have to play Radford and High Point, we're going to have to play really quality teams and we're going to have to match them. We have learned those lessons and we have seen those pictures and now I think we can take those pictures and turn them into a better result on the scoreboard."

What's Next?
The Bulldogs will open their conference season on the road at Campbell, Saturday, September 21, with a 2 p.m. matchup with the Camels.
