Eight-Run Inning Propels Bulldogs to Mountain Rivalry Win Over Western Carolina

04.24.2019 | Baseball

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -  An eight-run inning helped propel UNC Asheville baseball to its sixth win in its last seven meetings with Western Carolina with the Bulldogs earning an 11-8 victory over the Catamounts on Wednesday, April 24, at Childress Field at Hennon Stadium.

The Catamounts (17-19) scored the first five runs of the game before the Bulldogs posted two runs in the top of the third inning. Chris Troost got things going in the top of the inning for the Bulldogs when he doubled down the left field line. Kole Harris then singled to move Troost over to third and give the Bulldogs runners at the corners.

UNC Asheville (14-26) leadoff hitter Greg Gasparro then singled through the right side to bring home Troost. After a PJ Heintz sacrifice bunt, Jake Madole then hit a sacrifice fly to score Harris and pull the Bulldogs within three at 5-2.

The Catamounts would score one run in the bottom of the inning to go ahead by four at 6-2 after three innings played.

The Bulldogs completely changed the complexion of the game in the top of the fourth with eight runs to take a 10-6 lead over Western Carolina.

Danny Wilson started the inning by collecting the first of his two hits in the frame. He then stole second before Joe Gruszka flied out to move him to third. A couple of batters later after Carmine Pagano was hit by a pitch, Troost doubled once again to score Wilson. Pagano also scored on the play on a throwing error.

Heintz a little while later then brought in two more runs on a double before Jake Madole doubled in Heintz to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Wilson's second hit of the inning a little while later was a big one with his three-run home run giving the Bulldogs a 10-6 lead. The home run was the fifth of the year for Wilson.

The Catamounts would score two more runs in the game, but it would not be enough.

In fact, the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to secure the 11-8 win.

The 11th run of the day for the Bulldogs materialized after Wilson, who had walked to start the top of the ninth, was tripled home by Troost.

Harris closed things out from there on the mound to give the Bulldogs the rivalry win. The save gave him seven on the season, which is tied with Ben Buchanan (2007) and Nick Brannon (2000) for the third-most saves in a single season in program history. Harris now has 15 total saves in his career, which is tied with Buchanan (2005-08) for the most in program history.

UNC Asheville reliever Blake Brown (3-2) picked up the win on the hill in relief of starter Jacob Edwards. Brown fanned two.

Five Bulldog pitchers were used in the game in total with JP Perez pitching a fantastic 4.0 innings.

UNC Asheville receiver Eric Whitecavage set a new program record in the game with his 98th career appearance. He struck out one in his record 98th overall appearance as a Bulldog.

Western Carolina used four pitchers in the game with reliever Ryan Mitschele (0-2) taking the loss in relief of starter Blake Therrian.

The Bulldogs out-hit Western Carolina, 13-12, in the game overall.

Troost and Wilson led the Bulldogs in the game. Troost had three hits on two doubles and a triple, while Wilson was a triple shy of the cycle. Troost was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Wilson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Heintz was 2-of-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the game.

UNC Asheville will next travel to High Point, N.C. for a three-game Big South Conference series matchup versus High Point on April 27-29.
