Pagano and Edwards Post Multiple Hits in Narrow Bulldog Home Loss to Furman

04.16.2019 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite two hits each from Carmine Pagano and Jacob Edwards, Furman narrowly took a 3-2 non-conference victory over UNC Asheville on Tuesday, April 16, at Greenwood Field.

Furman (13-23) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, but UNC Asheville (12-23) plated two in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 advantage.

The two runs for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second inning came with two outs. Joe Gruszka started the two-out rally when he singled to left field. Pagano then singled to center field to move Gruszka into scoring position. Chris Troost was then walked to load the bases for the Bulldogs.

Edwards singled up the middle next to score Gruszka and Pagano and give the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead.

The 2-1 lead would last until the top of the fifth inning when Furman scored what would turn out to be the two game-winning runs in its eventual 3-2 win.

The Paladins out-hit the Bulldogs, 11-7, in the contest.

Pagano was 2-for-2 overall in the game with the run scored. Edwards was 2-for-4 with the two RBIs.

UNC Asheville's Jake Madole and Brandon Lankford also had hits in addition to Pagano, Gruszka and Edwards.

Bret Huebner, Dax Roper and Anthony Fontana led Furman with two hits each.

Nik Verbeke (2-4) earned the win in relief of starter Jordan Beatson. He pitched two innings and was one of five Paladin pitchers. Eric Taylor pitched the final inning for Furman to pick up his first save of the season.

UNC Asheville starter Danny Wilson (0-4) pitched the first 4.1 innings for UNC Asheville in suffering the loss. He struck out five.

Seven Bulldog pitchers were used in total in the game with Joe Sondock, Ethan Tressler, JP Perez, Trey Jernigan, Eric Whitecavage and Kole Harris all pitching effectively in relief of Wilson. The seven Bulldog pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.

The Bulldogs will next host Big South Conference rival Charleston Southern at Greenwood Field for a three-game series April 18-20.
