Bulldogs Drop Both Games of Doubleheader to Charleston Southern
04.18.2019 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville dropped both games of its doubleheader with Charleston Southern on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Greenwood Field.
The Buccaneers (16-26, 6-11 Big South) picked up a come-from-behind 3-2 win in the first game before taking an 8-2 win in the second game.
As of right now, UNC Asheville (12-25, 7-10 Big South) and Charleston Southern are scheduled to close out their three-game league series with a 6 p.m. game on Friday, April 19, but impending inclement weather may change that.
A decision will be made on Friday morning on when the third and final game of the series will be played.
Game One: Charleston Southern 3, UNC Asheville 2
UNC Asheville opened the scoring in the game in the bottom of the second inning with a single run. PJ Heintz started things off by singling to center field. He then was able to score after an Andrew Friedholm hit that eventually led to an error by the Buccaneer leftfielder. Opportunistically, Heintz made his way home to give the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
Charleston Southern would tie things up in the top of the fifth, but the Bulldogs would take the lead back at 2-1 with another single run in the bottom of the sixth frame.
UNC Asheville's Brandon Lankford started the bottom of the sixth with an infield single. After a wild pitch advanced him to second, a Danny Wilson fly out moved him to third. Heintz made sure to bring him home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The 2-1 Bulldog lead would last until the top of the ninth when the Buccaneers plated the two go-ahead runs to eventually take the win.
The Bulldogs out-hit Charleston Southern, 7-5, in game one.
Heintz led Asheville in game one by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Josh Litchfield led the Buccaneers with two hits.
Charleston Southern freshman RJ Petit (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Jaret Bennett. Petit pitched the final three innings.
UNC Asheville reliever Blake Brown (2-2) suffered the loss on the hill.
Game Two: Charleston Southern 8, UNC Asheville 2
Charleston Southern scored the first eight runs in the second game before the Bulldogs attempted to mount a late rally.
In fact, the Bulldogs plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within six of the Buccaneers.
Chris Troost captured the first run of the game for the Bulldogs when his double to right-center field scored Joe Gruszka. A few batters later, Heintz scored his second run of the day to make it 8-2.
The Bulldogs would battle down the stretch, but that would prove to be as close as UNC Asheville would be able to get to the Buccaneers.
Charleston Southern out-hit UNC Asheville 10-2 in the game. Dominic Freeberger had the other Bulldog hit in the game.
UNC Asheville starter Jordan Carr (3-6) suffered the loss in the game. He pitched the first five innings for the Bulldogs.
