Bulldogs Open Big South Series With Winthrop With 12-2 Victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind 16 hits, UNC Asheville opened its Big South Conference series with Winthrop with a dominating 12-2 victory over the Eagles on Friday, April 12, at Greenwood Field.

Highlights
UNC Asheville (12-20, 7-6 Big South) opened the game by taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off a two-run home run from Brandon Lankford.
The two-run home run allowed Lankford to take over sole possession of second place in program history for career home runs with 29. His 11 home runs this season also sets a new career-best for Lankford, who also moved into the single-season top-10 in program history with his 11th home run of the season. Lankford's 11 home runs this season leads the Big South and keeps him in the top-15 in the category in the country.
Winthrop (18-15, 8-5 Big South) would even things with single runs in the top of the second and third innings, but UNC Asheville would take the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The two runs were part of 10 unanswered runs for the Bulldogs in their dominating win.
The Bulldogs from there would go on to also plate three runs in the bottom of the fourth, three runs in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Overall, UNC Asheville out-hit the Eagles, 16-14.
Five different Bulldogs collected multiple hits in the game with Greg Gasparro and Chris Troost leading the way with three hits each. Gasparro also scored three runs and had an RBI and a triple. Troost had two RBIs and scored a run.
Dominic Freeberger, Jake Madole and Danny Wilson all had two hits for the Bulldogs. Freeberger scored twice in the game as did Madole and Wilson.
Wilson also had three RBIs.
It was not just the offense that sizzled in the game though with the Bulldog pitching duo of Jordan Carr and Blake Brown fanning 12 in the game.
Carr (3-5) struck out five and scattered 12 hits in 5.2 innings on the hill. He threw 116 pitches in securing his third win of the season. Brown dealt the final 3.1 innings to collect his first save of the year. He struck out seven.
Winthrop starter Zach Peek (4-2) suffered the loss on the hill for the Eagles. He struck out three, but allowed seven runs (six earned).
Up Next
The three-game series will now conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13, at Greenwood Field. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. The second game of the twinbill will start approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
