Winthrop Narrowly Holds Off Bulldogs to Complete Saturday Doubleheader Sweep

04.13.2019 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball narrowly dropped its Big South doubleheader to Winthrop on Saturday, April 13, at Greenwood Field.

The Eagles (20-15, 10-5 Big South) earned a 9-1 win in game one before holding off the Bulldogs (12-22, 7-8 Big South) for a 4-3 win in game two.

The doubleheader sweep allowed Winthrop to take the series over UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs had earned a 12-2 win in game one on Friday, April 12.

Game One: Winthrop 9, UNC Asheville 1
Winthrop took an early 4-0 advantage with four runs in the top of the third inning.

The Bulldogs would pull one back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run by Brandon Lankford.

The home run was the 30th of Lankford's career as a Bulldog. It was also his Big South-leading 12th home run of the season. The 12 home runs are tied for seventh-most in single-season history in UNC Asheville baseball history.

Winthrop would plate five more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-1 win in the first game of the twinbill.

The Eagles overall out-hit the Bulldogs, 15-6, in the game.

Joe Gruszka and Carmine Pagano led UNC Asheville with two hits each. Pagano smacked his eighth double of the season in the game.

Greg Gasparro (1-6) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs. He pitched the first 3.1 innings. In total, three Bulldogs were used on the hill. Austin Fahr did not allow a run in pitching the final 4.1 innings for the Bulldogs.

Nate Pawelczyk (7-2) garnered the win on the hill for Winthrop. He pitched the first six innings, fanning five. Dalton Whitaker earned the save by pitching the final three innings for the Eagles. He struck out one.

Tyler Baker led the Eagles in game one with three hits.

Game Two: Winthrop 4, UNC Asheville 3
The game started with the rare double off the pitcher's leg for Gasparro, who had his hit bounce off the leg of Winthrop starter Thad Harris into the outfield. Gasparro assessed the situation astutely and made sure to leg the play out into a double.

Dominic Freeberger then singled over Gasparro to third to give the Bulldogs runners at the corners with no outs. Jake Madole then singled in Gasparro to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Danny Wilson shortly thereafter brought home Freeberger, who even though just on second was able to find his way home on Wilson's sacrifice fly that gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

The 2-0 lead would last until the top of the fourth when Winthrop tied things up at 2-2. One inning later the Eagles would add two more to take a 4-2 advantage.

The Bulldogs would get one of the two runs back in the bottom of the sixth off back-to-back doubles by Lankford and Wilson. After Lankford's seventh double of the year, Wilson's double to right-center field brought home Lankford. The double was the ninth of the year for Wilson.

That would prove to be as close as the Bulldogs could get in the narrow one-run loss.

Despite suffering the loss, UNC Asheville starter Jacob Edwards (3-2) was fantastic in dealing seven innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs. He struck out six.

Edwards was one of four Bulldog pitchers used in the game. Eric Whitecavage came in after Edwards and allowed just one hit. His appearance in the game marked his 95th as a Bulldog. He is now in sole possession of second all-time for appearances in UNC Asheville baseball history.

JP Perez and Kole Harris were next for the Bulldogs on the hill with both pitching 0.2 innings and both allowing no hits.

Winthrop starter Thad Harris pitched the first 7.0 innings as well. He struck out one and allowed six hits and three earned runs. Colten Rendon pitched the final 2.0 innings for the Eagles to secure his third save of the year. Rendon fanned three.

Both teams had six hits in the second game of the doubleheader.

No Bulldog had multiple hits in the game with six different players from Asheville notching a hit. Wilson had two RBIs in the game.

Alex Raines and Jake Sullivan each had two hits for Winthrop.
