Three Bulldogs Finish With Two Hits in Loss to Appalachian State

04.10.2019 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville took an early lead, but Appalachian State picked up an 8-2 win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday, April 10, at Greenwood Field.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights
UNC Asheville (11-20) scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Greg Gasparro singled to right field to score PJ Heintz and Carmine Pagano. Heintz had singled through the left side to get things going before Pagano was walked. Chris Troost then looked to sacrifice the runners over, but the Appalachian State first baseman was unable to glove the ball to allow him to reach on an error and load the bases for the Bulldogs.

Gasparro took over from there a couple batters later when his two-RBI single scored the duo to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 advantage.

Appalachian State (13-18) would plate seven runs in the top half of the next inning to take a 7-2 lead. They would add one more run in the top of the seventh to set the final score at 8-2.

The Mountaineers out-hit the Bulldogs, 13-8, with five players from Appalachian State recording multiple hits.

Three Bulldogs finished with multiple hits with Heintz, Gasparro and Danny Wilson each notching two hits.

UNC Asheville utilized the services of eight pitchers in the game with Wilson (0-3) taking the loss. He pitched the first 2.2 innings for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldog bullpen had some strong performances with JP Perez fanning two and giving up no hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Ethan Tressler struck out one in a strong 0.2 innings on the hill. Joe Sondock fanned one in one inning pitched, while Kole Harris struck out one in dealing the final inning for UNC Asheville.

Appalachian State's Kaleb Bowman (4-0) earned the win on the hill in relief of starter Austin Primm. Bowman pitched 2.2 innings. He was one of five Appalachian State pitchers used in the game.
