Baseball Looks to Carry Momentum at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After sweeping Longwood at Greenwood Field over the weekend, the UNC Asheville baseball team will travel to Charlotte on Wednesday, April 3 at Hayes Stadium.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on UNCC TV.
About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville travels to Charlotte with an 11-15 overall record and 6-3 mark in Big South games. The Bulldogs are currently on a three-game win streak, as they swept Longwood at Greenwood Field this past weekend. The series sweep was the first for Asheville since the 2012 season when it swept High Point on the road.
In the three-game sweep of the Lancers, the Bulldogs hit .360 as a team, including posting a slugging percentage of .514. Of the 40 total hits in the three-game stretch, 11 went for extra-bases. The Bulldogs outscored the Lancers, 36-19, and held a 25-11 advantage in walks. On the mound, Asheville collected 32 strikeouts and 15 earned runs.
Individually, Danny Wilson was a force at the plate, as the senior utility player totaled seven hits. Of those seven hits, five went for extra-bases. He also totaled an incredible 10 RBIs and also touched home six times. Dominic Freeberger and Joe Gruszka each connected with five hits and three RBIs each. Jake Madole was clutch in the three-game set, as he only totaled two hits but collected five RBIs. Overall, eight Bulldogs hit .364 or better during the sweep.
On the hill, Jacob Edwards headlined the starting rotation, as he made his first career weekend start on Saturday. The freshman left-hander worked 5.1 innings and struck out six, which were both career highs. He held the Lancers scoreless and scattered four hits. Six other Bulldogs didn't allow an earned run. Kole Harris was phenomenal out of the bullpen, as he worked 2.2 frames en route to earning two saves. Trey Jernigan was also impressive, as he posted three innings of relief. He didn't allow an earned run. Joe Sondock was equally impressive, as the freshman tossed two frames without a hit or run.
Scouting Charlotte
Charlotte welcomes UNC Asheville to Hayes Stadium with an 11-15-1 and a 9-9 mark in its home park. The 49ers are currently on a four-game winless streak and have only won one game since March 16.
Five 49ers are hitting above .300 this year. Todd Elwood has a team-best .388 batting average, but he has only started 17 games. Harris Yett has started all 27 games for Charlotte, and he sports a .368 batting average. He has 39 total hits, which includes a team-best 14 doubles, five home runs, 21 runs and 24 RBIs. Out of the everyday starters, Carson Johnson is right behind Yett with a .324 clip. Johnson has 34 hits in 105 at-bats. He has five doubles, 20 runs and 11 RBIs.
Matt Brooks headlines the starting rotation for Charlotte, as he sports an undefeated record of 3-0. He has a 3.10 ERA in four starts. He has twirled 20.1 innings and has totaled 21 strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Patrick Szczpinski and Colby Bruce are two key relievers for the 49ers, as they have combined for 23 total appearances. Both have 23 strikeouts and have at least 20 innings of relief this season.
