UNC Asheville’s Win Streak Ends in Narrow Loss at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – To end a three-game win streak, the UNC Asheville baseball team fell to Charlotte, 5-2, on the road on Wednesday at Hayes Stadium.
The Bulldogs totaled six hits, including Brandon Lankford's ninth home run of the season. That Big South Conference-leading mark is now ranked in the top 20 in NCAA Division I.
BULLDOG BITES
Highlights
Charlotte jumped out to a big inning in the first frame, as it plated four runs. Harris Yett connected with a two-RBI double, and two batters later, Dominick Cammarata tallied a two-out, two-run home run to take the four-run lead in the first.
UNC Asheville was able to trim the deficit in the second inning, as Lankford smacked his ninth homer of the year. The leadoff home run was the 27th of his career, which made the game 4-1.
An inning later, the Bulldogs were able to add on one more run, as Lankford tallied a sacrifice fly. He plated Wade Chandler, who earned a bunt single to lead off the inning.
After a quiet fourth inning for both squads, Charlotte added a run in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to three, 5-3. Carson Johnson scored on a groundout after his leadoff double to start the inning.
The final three-and-a-half innings flew by, as both teams only combined for two hits during that span. For UNC Asheville, Joe Sondock and Eric Whitecavage closed the final three innings on the hill. Sondock worked two frames and didn't allow a hit, run or walk. Whitecavage did the same but in one inning of work. The Bulldog tandem each struck out one.
Lankford ended the game as the lone Bulldog with a RBI, as the junior third baseman ended with two. He also added two hits and touched home once.
Dominic Freeberger also connected with a pair of hits, both singles, while Jake Madole and Chandler rounded out the hits for the Asheville offense with a hit apiece.
The 3-4-5 hitters for the Bulldogs combined for five of the six total hits.
Danny Wilson was pinned with the loss after allowing four runs in three innings.
Austin Fahr was the first reliever for Asheville, and he went 1.1 innings with one run and two hits.
Ethan Tressler was strong in his 0.2 inning outing. The sophomore struck out one and held the 49er offense scoreless.
With the loss, UNC Asheville falls to 11-16 overall, and Charlotte moves to 12-15-1 on the year.
What's Next?
UNC Asheville will travel to Presbyterian for a three-game Big South series beginning on Friday, April 5. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 3 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
