The Bulldog offense tried to work quickly, as Dominic Freeberger collected a double to right center in the first inning. He eventually moved to third thanks to a groundout, but he was left 90 feet away from scoring as the final Bulldog struck out to end the inning.
Campbell took advantage of the scoreless first inning for Asheville, as the Camels plated a run in the bottom half of the frame. They doubled that lead, 2-0, in the bottom of the second via an unearned run.
The Camels' offense tacked on seven runs off six hits in the third inning to take a 9-0 lead.
The Big South preseason favorite added three more runs in the fourth, as Matthew Christian knocked a three-run home run to make it a 12-0 contest.
The Bulldogs ended the shutout in the top of the sixth, as rookie catcher PJ Heintz connected with his first career home run with two outs. He took a 2-2 count and sent the pitch over the wall in left center.
Campbell then rattled off nine more runs in the home half of the sixth to take the 21-1 lead and eventually claim the victory to even the series.
Heintz headlined the UNC Asheville offense, as the rookie tallied his first career home run.
Freeberger added to the offense with a double, while Carmine Pagano contributed a single in Saturday's game.
Three Bulldogs – Trey Jernigan, Austin Fahr and David Dobson – had scoreless relief appearances. The trio combined for 2.1 innings, two hits and only one walk.
UNC Asheville falls to 8-13 overall and 3-2 in Big South games, while Campbell moves to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in league contests.
What's Next?
The rubber match between the Bulldogs and Camels is set for Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m. Greg Gasparro will start on the mound for the Bulldogs to end the three-game road series.
