ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville dropped its Big South Conference opener in a 10-2 loss at Greenwood Field to USC Upstate on Friday, March 15, 2019.

Highlights

USC Upstate (9-9, 1-0 Big South) scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second, but UNC Asheville (5-12, 0-1 Big South) responded with its own two runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Brandon Lankford got things going in the inning when he collected his third double of the season. UNC Asheville's Jake Madole a couple of batters later then blasted a two-run shot to left field to plate Lankford and tie things up at 2-all.

The home run was the first of the season for Madole, who now has five home runs in his Bulldog career.

USC Upstate from there would add eight more runs to take the 10-2 game one win.

Jordan Carr (1-4) suffered the loss on the hill for UNC Asheville. He fanned two in his 5.2 innings on the hill. Three Bulldog pitchers were utilized in total with Trey Jernigan striking out three in his 2.1 innings on the mound. Joe Sondock did not allow a hit in his inning on the mound.

Jordan Marks (2-2) pitched the first seven innings of the game for USC Upstate to register his second victory of the season.

The Spartans had a 15-6 advantage in hits in the game.

Five different Bulldogs collected hits with Joe Gruszka, Dominic Freeberger, Danny Wilson and Carmine Pagano each posting hits in addition to Madole's home run. Gruska, Lankford and Pagano each had doubles.

Julian Rip led USC Upstate with four hits.

What's Next?
UNC Asheville will look to even the series with USC Upstate in the second game of a scheduled three-game set at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at Greenwood Field.
