UNC Asheville Falls in Series Finale to UMBC

MARION, N.C. – To conclude the three-game series at the Big League Camp, UNC Asheville baseball fell to UMBC on Sunday, 12-0.

Highlights
UMBC opened the game with four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead.
UNC Asheville had a chance to score in the fifth inning, as Danny Wilson led off the frame with a single up the middle. Following a wild pitch, Joe Gruszka connected with a double to put two runners in scoring position. However, the Retrievers left the Bulldogs stranded with three straight outs.
The Retrievers tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the 12-0 win over the Bulldogs.
Freshman Jacob Edwards was the lone Bulldog with a multi-hit performance, as he connected with two singles. He also walked once.
JP Perez, Wilson and Gruszka were the other three Bulldogs to record a hit, as Gruszka's hit was the only one to go for extra-bases.
Eric Whitecavage and Ethan Tressler had solid outings from the bullpen. Whitecavage twirled 2.1 innings of work and only allowed two hits. He held the Retrievers scoreless and didn't walk a batter. Tressler posted 3.1 innings and also allowed just two hits. He struck out one batter and didn't surrender a walk.
What's Next?
UNC Asheville will play two midweek contests next week. To kick off the midweek games, the Bulldogs will travel to Wofford on Tuesday, Feb. 26. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. To round out the two-game midweek, Asheville will then travel to Greenville, S.C. to square off with Furman on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.
