Bulldogs Roll Past Charleston Southern for Eighth Sweep of the Season
11.01.2019 | Women's Volleyball
ASHEVILLE – The Justice Center was adorned in pink ribbons and balloons, and the raucous crowd was filled with pink-clad Bulldog supporters as Friday night's UNC Asheville volleyball match that saw the Bulldogs take down Charleston Southern, 3-0, for the team's eighth sweep of the season.
The Bulldogs (10-10, 4-5 Big South) came out for warmups in pink t-shirts as part of the team's "Dig Pink" game in association with the Side-Out Foundation to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
After a month away from their home gym, the Bulldogs looked energized to play in front of the home crowd, and the fans responded all night with cheers and enthusiasm.
As a team, the Bulldogs finished the match with a .395 hitting percentage, besting the previous season high of .368 set against Gardner-Webb, October 5. It's the highest single-match hitting percentage for the Bulldogs since hitting .466 against Radford in 2015.
Senior Julia Borges led the way with 12 kills on a .500 hitting percentage night, while chipping in seven digs and a team-high four block assists. Junior Cecilia Stack also had a big offensive night, converting 10 kills on a .750 hitting percentage. She also racked up three block assists.
Senior Ansley Rooks matched her season-high with 15 digs and added six kills, while sophomore Molly Hackett added eight kills and senior Julia Loveday had seven kills and three total blocks.
Kailey Hackett finished just off her career-high, contributing 37 assists to help propel the Bulldogs offense.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: It was the "Stack Attack" as the junior middle blocker had an impressive first set, registering six kills on six attempts, while the Bulldogs accounted for 15 kills and a .448 hitting percentage as a team. The Bulldogs held the lead for the majority of the early going, but didn't put much distance between themselves and the Buccaneers. A 4-0 run by CSU gave the visitors an 18-17 lead, but a kill by Borges and back-to-back blocks ignited the crowd and made it 20-18 Bulldogs, prompting a Buccaneers timeout. The Bucs got a point back, but back-to-back kills by Molly Hackett and Borges and a Borges ace returned momentum to the Bulldogs, and they would take the first set.
SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 25-19: The second set was close through much of the first half of the set, as the Buccaneers tied it six times. The match went to the media timeout with the Bulldogs holding a narrow 15-14 lead. Returning from the break, the Bulldogs scored six of the next eight points to force the Buccaneers into a timeout. The run began with two straight kills from Loveday and a third from Borges. Charleston Southern narrowed the gap to 24-19, but a Borges kill along the right side put things away and gave the home team a 2-0 advantage in the match. Borges led the way with five kills in the set.
SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-14: Again, the first part of the set remained competitive with the Bulldogs holding a slight 7-5 advantage. But from that point, it was all Bulldogs as they went on a 10-0 run to make it 17-5 in favor of the home team. The run began with a kill from Loveday and two straight from Borges. With the match at set point, Rooks seemed to have won it with a kill along the left line, but it was ruled out. No matter. She came back on the next point and put it away with her sixth kill of the match.

FROM FREDERICO SANTOS
"One of the things I asked the kids tonight was to really get energy, have excitement out there and most of all, have fun. I know the last five games have been kind of tough, and it's easy to hang your head down, but I know we have the team like the one we saw tonight. I think if every player keeps believing on the product we put out there tonight, then we'll keep rolling."
