Borges’ Career Day Leads Bulldogs to Five-Set Victory Against Presbyterian

11.02.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – Senior Julia Borges set career-highs with 23 kills and 19 digs to help lead UNC Asheville's volleyball team to a five-set victory against Presbyterian, Saturday, at the Justice Center.

The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native bested her previous career-high of 19 kills set earlier this season against Long Beach State, and became the first Bulldog to hit for more than 20 kills in a match since Cara Guthrie in 2018 against USC Upstate.

In addition to her career numbers in her fifth double-double of the year, Borges also contributed two solo blocks for the Bulldogs (11-10, 5-5 Big South).

Senior Kailey Hackett also had a day to remember, setting career highs with 44 assists and 12 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Senior Ansley Rooks finished second with 12 kills and tied her career-high with 18 digs to record her sixth double-double on the year. Senior Julia Loveday finished with 10 kills while sophomore Molly Hackett just missed on the double-double, finishing with nine kills and 10 digs.

Junior Kasey West added 17 digs to help the Bulldogs finish with 93 as a team, their most in a match since recording 95 digs at Charleston Southern in 2017.

Head coach Frederico Santos was quick to thank the crowd for providing energy that helped the Bulldogs turn the momentum of the match in the fourth set. It was the first match the Bulldogs played that went past three sets since falling in five sets at Hampton, October 11.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: The Bulldogs recorded 16 kills as a team to start the match, led by five from Rooks. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 4-0 run that featured two kills from Borges and one from Loveday. The Bulldogs had another 4-0 run, with kills from Rooks and both Hacketts to go up 10-5. Presbyterian would close the gap to one, 15-14, but the Bulldogs would not relinquish the lead and Molly Hackett gave the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead in the match with a kill.

SET 2, BLUE HOSE WIN 25-19: Loveday led the way with four of the Bulldogs 11 kills in the set. The Blue Hose kept a slight advantage in the early going, moving ahead 12-10 after an exciting back-and-forth rally that ended with a PC kill. The Bulldogs narrowed the lead to one, but PC took seven of the next 10 points to force a Bulldogs timeout. Borges had a pair of kills down the stretch, but it was not enough to propel a Bulldogs comeback in the set.

SET 3, BLUE HOSE WIN 25-18: With PC holding a 9-5 advantage, Kailey Hackett found Lexy Cole who dropped it over the next perfectly to narrow the lead to three. Later, with the Blue Hose up 14-9 and threatening to pull away, Borges slammed home a monster kill and Loveday followed that up with a service ace. The Blue Hose used a 6-1 run to go up 20-12, but a Cole block and Harley Middleton kill jumpstarted a 3-0 run to bring the Bulldogs within five. PC scored four of the next five to get to set point, but the Bulldogs made them work for it, scoring the next two points before the Blue Hose were eventually able to secure a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET 4, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: Borges was a monster in the fourth set, recording 10 kills to fuel a Bulldogs' rally. After PC went up 4-1 to start the match, Borges ignited the crowd with an emphatic kill, but as they had done throughout the day, the Blue Hose responded, taking the next four points to force the Bulldogs into a timeout. The Bulldogs won three of the next four points, highlighted by a block by Cecilia Stack and Kailey Hackett and an ace from Kasey West. Despite constant pressure from the Blue Hose, Borges wouldn't let the Bulldogs go away quietly, securing three kills to help the Bulldogs narrow the lead to 15-13 and force a PC timeout. After narrowing the lead to one four times, the Bulldogs finally tied it up, 21-21, on a block from Stack. After a PC timeout, Borges hit another huge kill, and after a Stack kill, Borges had two more to help the Bulldogs close out the frame on a 6-0 run to tie the match, 2-2.

SET 5, BULLDOGS 16-14: After both teams traded points to start, the Blue Hose scored three in a row to take a 7-4 lead, inducing an Asheville timeout. With PC holding a 9-5 lead, the Bulldogs ripped off three-straight, leading to a PC timeout. Two 3-0 runs, led by two kills apiece from Borges and Loveday, gave Asheville match point, 14-11, but PC did not lay down, taking the next three points. A Hackett-to-Hackett kill gave the Bulldogs match point again, and they put away the victory on a Blue Hose error.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs hit the road for the final regular season contests away from home, taking on Gardner-Webb, Friday, before a matchup with league-leader Winthrop, Saturday.

FROM FREDERICO SANTOS
"The conversation we had that if we keep putting in more, if everybody puts in a little bit more with what they can control, we could start shaving off points. We decided to be smart with our offense as well, and I think both Julias really elevated and got us kills in critical moments in that fourth set that really propelled us to the fifth set. In the fifth, it's a battle of nerves and who can maintain their composure to do well at the end. It was awesome. I know that word doesn't do it justice. This was just phenomenal. The girls were able to overcome a lot, and that's important moving forward."
