Borges’ 20 Kills Leads Bulldogs to Sweep of Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second straight match, senior Julia Borges hit at least 20 kills as UNC Asheville's volleyball team recorded its ninth sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory against Gardner-Webb, Friday.
The Bulldogs (12-10, 6-5 Big South) were led by the reigning Big South Player of the Week as Borges not only contributed 20 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, but also added seven digs, two solo blocks and two assists.
As a team, the Bulldogs recorded 48 kills on a .315 hitting percentage. Sophomore Molly Hackett added nine kills and six digs, while senior Ansley Rooks chipped in eight kills and seven digs. Senior Kailey Hackett led the way with 30 assists and also contributed five kills.
Defensively, junior Kasey West led the way with 10 digs, while senior Julia Loveday had three total blocks, including two solo, and junior Cecilia Stack added two solo blocks.

SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 31-29: The first set turned into an absolute barn-burner, but it took a comeback effort from the Bulldogs to get to that point. Gardner-Webb opened up with a 10-4 lead, compiling two 4-0 runs in the early going. Borges ended the run with one of her nine kills in the first set to help the Bulldogs take 12 of the next 17 points and 16-15 lead in the set. The teams exchanged points, with Asheville having the first opportunity at set point, but it was spoiled by Gardner-Webb. The teams traded blows in extras and eventually made it to the teams tied at 29-29, but the Bulldogs were able to take a 1-0 lead in the match after a pair of errors from Gardner-Webb.
SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: Borges again led the way for the Bulldogs, recording eight kills in the second set. Neither team put much distance between themselves, as the largest the lead got in the first part of the set was 13-10, Asheville, but Gardner-Webb responded with a 3-0 run to tie it up. After a kill by Molly Hackett ended the run, Gardner-Webb took five of the next seven points to take an 18-16 lead in the set. The Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by a Rooks service ace and capped off with a Borges kill. Borges would then go on to score three of the Bulldogs final four points with kills, including on set point.
SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-20: The third set was another close one, as neither side built up more than a two-point lead halfway through the set. With Gardner-Webb holding a 14-12 advantage, Lexy Cole started a 3-0 Bulldogs run with two kills, along with one from Rooks. After trading points and tied at 17-17, the Bulldogs reeled off four in a row, started by a Borges kill and ended with an ace from Rooks. The teams traded points again, but the Bulldogs took the match on back-to-back errors from Gardner-Webb.
