Bulldogs Unable to Get Past Conference Leader Winthrop on the Road

11.09.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville's volleyball team won a set against Big South Conference-leading Winthrop, Saturday, but was unable to get past the Eagles, falling 3-1 at Winthrop Arena.

Junior Cecilia Stack led the charge for the Bulldogs (12-11, 6-6 Big South) with a career-high 11 kills, and set a season-best with five block assists. Seniors Julia Borges and Ansley Rooks each finished with eight kills apiece as the Bulldogs recorded 49 kills as a team. Rooks added 14 digs while Borges chipped in 12 and three block assists.

Senior Kailey Hackett had another strong offensive performance, finishing with 36 assists and six kills. She also contributed heavily on the defensive end with a career-best 18 digs – her second double-figure digs performance in the past three matches.

Sophomore Peyton McClinton had her best match of the year, securing a season-best seven kills to go along with four digs.

On the defensive end, junior Kasey West set a career high with 28 digs – the first time she has gone for 20-or-more digs since recording 20 in the second match of the season against Long Beach State.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, EAGLES WIN 25-23: The Bulldogs did not look fazed, coming out against the conference leaders like they belonged right there with them. After West hit a service ace to go up 8-6, Winthrop responded with a 6-0 run. The Bulldogs did not panic, though, and answered by taking five of the next six points that included two kills and an ace by Rooks to tie the set, 13-13. Winthrop battled back again, taking nine of the next 12 points, but the Bulldogs ripped off four straight points – bookended by a Rooks kill and West ace – to bring the deficit to 22-20. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap to one point twice, but the Eagles were able to win the first set on their second attempt at set point.

SET 2, EAGLES WIN 25-22: The Bulldogs used an early four-point run that featured an ace by Borges and kills by Stack and Kailey Hackett to take a 6-4 lead. Asheville built the lead to four on four occasions, but Winthrop used a 4-0 run to tie things up at 12 apiece. The Bulldogs scored six of the next nine points to go up 18-15, but the Eagles continued to respond, scoring five of the next seven points to tie it at 20 each. A kill by Molly Hackett and an error by Winthrop made it 22-20 Bulldogs, but the Eagles took the next five points and a 2-0 lead in the match.

SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-20: The Bulldogs refused to go away quietly as Stack recorded five of her 11 kills in the third set, while McClinton added three. With the set tied 12-12, the Bulldogs engineered a 5-0 run bookended by Stack kills, with an additional kill from McClinton and a service ace from Grace Volk. Winthrop scored the next two, but the Bulldogs put together another four-in-a-row with a kill from Kailey Hackett and an ace from Anna Skryd to go up 21-14. Winthrop scored five straight points after that point, but Rooks put it away with kills on three of the final four points.

SET 4, EAGLES WIN 25-20: After Winthrop used a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead, the Bulldogs scored four-in-a-row and eight of the next 10 points to take a 15-13 lead. Borges led the charge with three kills in that span. Kills by Kailey Hackett and Stack gave the Bulldogs a 20-18 lead, but the Eagles secured the final seven points to win the match.
