Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker in Five Sets to Campbell

11.15.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – In a tightly-contested matchup decided by razor-thin margins, UNC Asheville's volleyball team came up agonizingly short against Campbell, Friday night at the Justice Center, falling 3-2 in the match.

Senior Julia Borges led the team with 16 kills to go along with eight digs and six total blocks, including two solo blocks.

Seniors Julia Loveday and Ansley Rooks each finished with double-doubles, as Loveday recorded a career-best 15 digs to go along with five total blocks. Rooks recorded her seventh double-double effort of the season as she too hit 10 kills with 13 digs and four service aces.

Senior Kailey Hackett finished with 42 assists – just two off her career high set two weekends ago – and also recorded 11 digs, while Molly Hackett finished with eight kills and 10 digs.

Defensively, Kasey West finished with 26 digs, while Cecilia Stack led the team with six total blocks, including three solo, to go along with six kills.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-23: Borges had an impressive showing in the first set, leading the way with seven kills while fellow senior Rooks contributed five. After Campbell took the first point, the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run with Rooks back to serve that featured a service ace and two kills from Molly Hackett. With Asheville up 11-9, Campbell took seven of the next eight points to go up 16-12, and would later increase the lead to 20-15. The teams traded points, and Campbell held a 23-19 lead. After an error by Campbell, Rooks went back to serve, and the Bulldogs would take the final five points, including another Rooks' ace and three-straight kills from Borges.

SET 2, CAMELS WIN 25-23: The second set remained close and back-and-forth throughout, as neither side built a lead greater than three points. Trailing 12-10, the Bulldogs scored three in a row, featuring an ace and kill from Borges. Campbell reclaimed the lead, 14-13, but the Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 run bookended by another Borges kill and a Molly Hackett service ace to go up 17-14. Campbell answered back, taking seven of the next eight to go up 21-18. Asheville scored three straight to tie it up at 21 apiece, but Campbell took four of the final six points to level the match.

SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-20: The majority of the third set was similar to the second, as neither side grew the lead and the momentum shifted back-and-forth quickly. The Bulldogs, trailing 8-6, scored six-of-seven points to take a 12-9 lead with two service aces from Rooks. The Camels answered back with four straight. They continued to trade blows, and with the Camels holding a 20-19 lead, Borges hit home her fourth kill of the set, and in similar fashion to the first set, Rooks went back to serve, and again, the Bulldogs took the final five points of the set.

SET 4, CAMELS WIN 25-17: The Bulldogs came out firing, immediately jumping out to a 7-1 lead aided by six total errors from Campbell. The two teams would trade the next 10 points before Campbell took six of the next seven to narrow the lead to one, 13-12. After a kill by Molly Hackett, the Camels took control with 9-0 run. Stack had two kills and Loveday had one down the stretch, but it was not enough to keep the Camels from tying the match.

SET 5, CAMELS WIN 15-13: Again, the Bulldogs came out hot, racing to a 5-1 lead, prompting a Campbell timeout. And again, Campbell would answer, taking six of the next eight points to tie the set, 7-7. On the next point, a huge diving dig from West kept play alive and Rooks was able to score the kill for the Bulldogs. Trailing 11-9, Campbell responded with a 5-0 run to get to set point. Rooks and Molly Hackett recorded kills, but Campbell would take match point on its third attempt.

SANTOS SAYS
"I think it was a game of momentum, and both teams let the momentum swing a lot. I think that's why you saw some sets look lopsided. The first set, they were ahead, and all of a sudden, we're back in and we win it from a difficult position. The momentum just kept swaying from one side to the other, and you were just waiting to see where the pendulum was going to swing. For our team, where we could have been better is in our decision making, because we had a lot of opportunities within the fifth set and within other sets to be decisive. Unfortunately, in those opportunities, we weren't quite decisive enough to win the point, and sometimes, that's just what the other side needs at that time to just recover and move on. I think it was a good match. I think it was exciting. I think the crowd was into it all the way up until the end. Unfortunately, it didn't swing our way, but we have one more tomorrow and another chance for us to do well tomorrow and hopefully make the conference tournament." – Head Coach Frederico Santos
