Career Days by Rooks; Tatum Highlight Bulldogs’ Sweep on Senior Day

11.16.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – It was all smiles after the match for UNC Asheville's volleyball team as it took down Hampton, 3-0, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

Six seniors – Julia Borges, Kailey Hackett, Carter Kennedy, Julia Loveday, Ansley Rooks and Tearra Tatum – were honored prior to the start of the match, and all six started and contributed heavily to the outcome of the Bulldogs' (13-12, 7-7 Big South) 10th sweep of the season.

Rooks was a menace early and often, registering career-highs with 18 kills and 19 digs, along with two service aces to bring her team-leading season total to 32.

Tatum also had a Senior Day to remember, leading the team with four service aces in the match. She had two aces in her career entering the day.

Borges finished with 10 kills on the afternoon, recording her 13th double-digit kill effort of the season. Kailey Hackett led the way with 15 assists on the afternoon, while Loveday finished with a team-best two solo blocks. Kennedy added seven digs and two service aces.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-11: The first set was close in the early going. With Asheville holding a 6-4 lead, Hampton turned around and scored four straight points and started to gain momentum. But the Bulldogs shut down the momentum emphatically. After a service error from the Pirates, Tatum went back to serve and helped the Bulldogs rip off 12 in-a-row with two of her four aces. Rooks had three of her eight kills in the set during the run. An attack error by the Bulldogs halted the run, but they did not take the foot off the gas, securing seven of the next nine points to win the set, which included four kills from Rooks.

SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 26-24: The Pirates offered much more resistance in the second set, going so far as to take a seven-point lead late in the set. With the teams knotted up at 13 apiece, Hampton rolled for seven-straight points to take a 20-13 lead and a stranglehold of the momentum. Borges finally stemmed the tide with a kill, and kills from Molly Hackett and Grace Volk helped the Bulldogs take four of the next five points. The Bulldogs then finished the match with three separate three-point runs to complete the comeback. In the first run, Rooks picked up a kill and Tatum hit another ace. In the second, two Rooks kills sandwiched an ace from Kennedy. The final run, which started with the Pirates having set point, featured another Rooks' kill along with a kill from Borges.

SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-22: Again, Hampton hung tough in the third set, never letting the Bulldogs get too far out of sight. The Bulldogs held a slim 17-16 lead, and up to that point, neither team had led by more than two, and the largest run was a three-point run by Hampton. But the momentum would swing to the Bulldogs on kills from Stack and Rooks, and an ace from Kennedy that spurred a 4-0 run. The teams traded the next six points, which gave the Bulldogs match point at 24-19. The Pirates battled, taking the next three points, but Borges slammed the door shut with her 10th kill of the match,

SANTOS SAYS
"I think it was awesome that the seniors could all contribute and contributed in really a decisive win. From beginning to end – even in the second set when we fell back – the seniors were resolute in finishing their regular season on a high. I'm proud of them. I'm proud of every year and every minute they put on the court. It's a testament to them for them to finish the regular season this way. I know that they really want to do a lot at the conference tournament and that's where we set our sights. Congratulations to them, and thank you so much to the crowd that came to support and honor these talented seniors." – Head Coach Frederico Santos
