Bulldogs’ Season Comes to a Close at Big South Championship

CHARLOTTE – It certainly didn't play out for UNC Asheville's volleyball team in the same way it did the last time the Bulldogs faced off against Presbyterian earlier this season.
In what turned out to be the final match of the 2019 campaign for the Bulldogs, (13-13, 7-7 Big South), Presbyterian (15-14, 8-6 Big South) won the Big South Championship quarterfinal matchup, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Winthrop Coliseum.
After a thrilling five-set victory at home against the Blue Hose, November 2, the Bulldogs weren't able to muster the same magic and deliver a comeback in the conference tournament.
Senior Ansley Rooks led the team with seven kills and six digs in the match, while senior Julia Borges added six kills and nine digs.
Senior Kailey Hackett finished her final match with 19 assists and six digs.
Defensively, senior Julia Loveday contributed four total blocks, while Kasey West led the team with 12 digs.

SET 1, BLUE HOSE WIN 25-23: Presbyterian jumped out to a 13-6 lead, fueled by an early 4-0 run to jumpstart their attack. A kill by Borges and a service ace from Rooks helped the Bulldogs score three-in-a-row and four of the next five points to narrow the lead to 14-10. After PC took three of the next four points, the Bulldogs responded with two 3-0 runs to score six of the next seven points and tie the score at 17 apiece. Rooks and Molly Hackett had kills in the run, and West added an ace. The Blue Hose built the lead to 24-21, but weren't able to capitalize on set point on the first two attempts, recording two errors. With the score 24-23, PC took a 1-0 lead in the match with a kill.
SET 2, BLUE HOSE WIN 25-12: Kills by Rooks and Borges helped the Bulldogs keep the score close in the early going, with the Blue Hose holding a 5-3 lead. PC started to find its rhythm, but kills by Molly Hackett and Grace Volk helped to make it 11-6, Blue Hose. PC would then go on a 5-0 run and score nine of the next 11 points to take control of the set, 20-8. The Bulldogs scored four of the next seven points, but PC scored the final two to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3, BLUE HOSE WIN 25-19: The Blue Hose would again jump out to an 11-6 lead, but this time the Bulldogs would answer, scoring six of the next eight points to narrow the gap to one, 13-12. Molly Hackett had two kills in the run, while Kailey Hackett and Borges added one. Trailing 16-13, the Bulldogs scored four of the next five to tie things up at 17 apiece, featuring three kills by Rooks. The teams traded the next two points, leaving the score tied, 18-18, but PC would go on to score six straight points. A kill by Peyton McClinton on the first attempt at set point kept the match alive, but PC would take the victory on the next try.

"I think our team was more nervous than usual, and it obviously showed that even easy plays, we were not as accurate as we usually are. It's really difficult because once that happens, the tension just keeps increasing and getting worse. It was just not the performance we wanted. I know the girls are very upset, but at the end of the day, I think you have to come strong and you have to come with your intentions right away. I think we were slow getting off the gate and they were fast.
