Bulldogs Fall to Radford in Big South Conference Opener

RADFORD, Va. – To open Big South Conference play, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell to Radford on Saturday, 60-46, inside the Dedmon Center.

Game Highlights
UNC Asheville and Radford battled back-and-forth in the first quarter, but Radford held a three-point advantage at the halftime break. Sonora Dengokl had a team-best four points, as she tallied four of the Bulldogs' first seven points. Nadiria Evans and Amaryah Corpening closed the deficit to only one point with just over a minute left, but a Bryonna McClean jumper gave the Highlanders a three-point lead.
The Highlanders saw their lead increase to 12 points, as they held a 17-8 advantage in the second stanza.
At the halftime break, Jessica Wall had a team-best six points. Dengokl was right behind her teammate with four points, as they were the only two Bulldogs with more than one made field goal.
The Bulldogs continued to battle back into the contest, as they outscored the Highlanders by one point in the third quarter (15-14). Zip Scott started to find a groove in the stanza, as the junior knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
In the final 10 minutes of play, Radford sealed the win, as it claimed a three-point advantage in the fourth quarter, 15-12. Wall tallied another pair of three-pointers for Asheville, while Dengokl added another four points.
In the second half, Wall and Scott combined for 12 points and four 3-pointers made. Evans contributed five points, as the sophomore was perfect from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
Wall was UNC Asheville's leading scorer with 12 points, as all of her points came behind the three-point arc. She grabbed a pair of steals and added three assists in 36 minutes of play.
Dengokl and Evans combined for 15 points, six made field goals, 10 boards and a pair of assists.
Kelli Fisher, who played in her first game this year, grabbed eight boards to lead the Bulldogs. Dengokl also had eight rebounds.
As a team, the Bulldogs grabbed 47 rebounds, which included 17 on the offensive glass. Those 17 offensive rebounds led to 10 second-chance points.
UNC Asheville falls to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league action, while Radford advances to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in Big South play.
What's Next?
After four straight road games, the Bulldogs return to the friendly confines of Kimmel Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Asheville will square off with first-year Big South member Hampton. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on BSN on ESPN+.
