Bulldogs Lead From Start To Finish For Third Straight Victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – For its third straight victory, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team handed High Point a 67-56 loss inside Kimmel Arena. The Bulldogs never trailed in the head-to-head contest, which included having the lead for over 39 minutes on Saturday.

Game Highlights
Both the Bulldogs' and Panthers' offenses started red-hot, as the two squads combined for 39 points in the opening quarter. Twenty-two of those first-quarter points were scored by the Bulldogs. Junior Brooke Jordan-Brown had a team-best eight points, as she connected on two field goals. Half of her points came from the charity stripe. Sonora Dengokl picked up where she left off at USC Upstate, as the senior totaled seven points on 3-for-3 shooting in the first 10 minutes of play.
With a 22-17 lead, UNC Asheville extended its lead by six more points to take a 38-30 lead into halftime. Eight of Asheville's 16 second-quarter points were scored from the free throw line. Sophomore Nadiria Evans went a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe, while Zip Scott and Dengokl each were 2-for-2.
At the halftime break, Dengokl was leading both teams with 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Jordan-Brown had eight points and five boards in 10 minutes of play.
Both squads started to struggle in the third stanza, but Asheville again extended its lead after three quarters of play, 53-42. Dengokl and Evans combined for nine points, while Jimeshia Lawson and Tiffany Wilson totaled seven rebounds in the session.
The Bulldogs and Panthers played even for the final 10 minutes, 14-14, as UNC Asheville claimed the 67-56 victory over High Point.
All 10 Bulldogs scored in the Big South matchup with Dengokl and Jessica Wall each tallying double figures. Dengokl had a game-best 17 points, while Wall added 11 points. Scott, Evans and Jordan-Brown each totaled eight points.
Jordan-Brown set a career high in rebounds, as the center corralled 12 boards. Nine of the rebounds came on the defensive glass. Dengokl and McGill also contributed six boards apiece.
Senior guard Ali Trani led UNC Asheville in assists with four.
Overall UNC Asheville converted on a season-high 25 free throws in the home bout. The Bulldogs have now gone to the free throw line 18 or more times in the last five games.
With its third straight victory, UNC Asheville advances to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in Big South action. High Point drops to 10-6 on the year and 3-2 in league games.
