Bulldogs Fend Off Campbell, 60-52, to Claim First Big South Victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind a game-high 23 points from Sonora Dengokl and a team-high eight rebounds from Evonna McGill, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team fended off Big South rival Campbell, 60-52, on Saturday to claim its first Big South Conference victory of the season.

The first quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams, but UNC Asheville held a four-point lead after 10 minutes of play, 11-7. Dengokl was efficient in the stanza, as she went 3-for-4 and totaled seven points.
Both offenses started to pick up in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs continued to outscore the Camels to take a 27-18 lead at the intermission. In the 16-point second quarter, six Bulldogs scored, including five tallying two or more points in the quarter.
At the halftime break, UNC Asheville's offense was led by Dengokl, as the Sumter, S.C. native had 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Freshman center McGill was strong in the first half, as she totaled four points and five boards.
Campbell trimmed the deficit to only three points, 40-37, as Ashlyn Hampton totaled six points in the third quarter. UNC Asheville's Zip Scott matched her with six points in the same stanza.
The Bulldogs fended off the Campbell comeback, as they posted a five-point advantage in the final 10 minutes of play – 20-15. Dengokl posted eight points in the quarter, which was highlighted by six made free throws. McGill poured in four points, which includes two made free throws.
With the five-point swing in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs claimed their first Big South Conference victory of the season, 60-52.
Dengokl was outstanding in the conference contest, as the junior totaled 23 points. The senior was only four points away from matching a single-game best that she set earlier this year at Tennessee Tech. Dengokl went 7-for-12 from the field and 9-for-12 from the charity stripe. The nine made free throws set a single-game best.
McGill was also strong in the home game, as she totaled eight points, eight boards and a steal in 13 minutes of play. The eight boards set a single-game best for the rookie. She also converted on four free throws.
Scott shot over 44 percent – 4-for-9 – from the hardwood, as the guard posted 12 points. She also earned a steal and an assist in 36 minutes. Scott, along with Jessica Wall, knocked down a pair of three-pointers versus the Camels.
As a team, UNC Asheville forced 18 Campbell turnovers, while corralling nine steals. The Bulldogs shot 38 percent from the field, including a respectable 73 percent from the free throw line – 16-for-22.
UNC Asheville moves to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in Big South action, while Campbell falls to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Bulldogs will play their fifth game in 10 days on Tuesday, Jan. 15, as they travel to USC Upstate. The two teams will tip off at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C., and the head-to-head contest will be streamed on BSN on ESPN+.
