BULLDOG BITES
About UNC Asheville
UNC Asheville squares off with USC Upstate on Tuesday with a 6-9 overall record and a 1-3 mark in Big South games.
The Bulldogs claimed their first Big South win of the season on Saturday, as they upended Campbell, 60-52, inside Kimmel Arena. In that league contest, senior Sonora Dengokl led all scorers, as she put up 23 points. She went 7-for-12 from the field and an impressive 9-for-12 from the free throw line. She also grabbed four rebounds and tallied an assist. Junior Zip Scott was the second Bulldog in double figures, as she scored 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Freshman center Evonna McGill was impressive in the game, as she totaled eight points and grabbed a team-high eight boards. The eight rebounds matched a single-game best for the rookie.
With four Big South games under their belt, the Bulldog offense is led by seniors Jessica Wall and Dengokl. Wall has a team-best 13.5 points per game (ppg), while Dengokl averages 13.3 ppg. Wall is shooting .371 percent behind the three-point arc and makes 3.25 three-pointers per game. Dengokl has a team-best .426 field goal percentage in such games, as she averages five made field goals per contest. Zip Scott and Nadiria Evans help the Bulldog offense, as they average 6.8 and 5.2 ppg, respectively.
Scouting USC Upstate
USC Upstate hosts Asheville with a 5-9 overall record and a 1-2 mark in league games. The Spartans are 3-3 in their last six games with wins over Bob Jones, Brevard and Winthrop.
The Spartans have three efficient scorers in Brianna Lewis, Riley Popplewell and DeNisha Swain. Junior college transfer Lewis is leading the offense by averaging 18.9 ppg. She also leads the team in total assists with 80 and is one made field goal away from 100 on the year. Popplewell averages 11.4 ppg, and Swain sports an 11.1 ppg average. Swain is one of the best three-point shooters for Upstate, as totes a .316 three-point percentage (25-for-79). Right behind her in three-point percentage is Michaela Gibbons, who has a .305 percentage (25-for-82).
Popplewell is the Spartans' leading rebounder, as the 5-foot-11 center grabs 8.5 boards per game. Of her 119 total rebounds this season, 53 have come on the offensive glass. Swain and Gibbons are also threats on the boards, as they average 5.7 and 5.1 rebounds per game, respectively.
All-Time History Versus the Spartans
Tuesday's contest will mark the 11th all-time meeting between the Bulldogs and Spartans. The series is all tied at five apiece.
Last year the two clubs met on the hardwood, and the Bulldogs claimed a six-point victory over USC Upstate, 76-70. Wall went off in the game, as she connected with seven made three-pointers. The seven made three-pointers then broke a school record, but she eventually broke that mark in the Women's Basketball Invitational by connecting with nine 3-pointers versus Furman. In last year's game at USC Upstate, Wall finished with 22 points and five assists. Bronaza Fitzgerald nearly earned a double-double, as she tallied 15 points and nine rebounds. Seven of those boards came on the offensive glass. Brooke Jordan-Brown also poured in 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
