How It Happened

The Bulldogs took the first shot of the contest, as senior defender Kyra Kandel took a shot eight minutes into the contest. However, the attempt went wide of the net for the Cary, N.C. native.

The Keydets started to find a rhythm on offense in the 9th minute. For the next 17 minutes, VMI peppered the Asheville net with eight shots. Of those eight, four were saved by O'Malley.

UNC Asheville rebounded on defensively, as it held VMI to only four more shots in the final 20 minutes of play in the first half.

At the halftime break, O'Malley had five saves.

To kick off the second half, VMI started off hot, as it struck for three shots and two corners in the first 10 minutes of play. Of the three shots, two were on frame.

Neither team had a solid chance at net until the 86th minute when sophomore Emily Duenas nearly found the back of the net. She struck a shot within the VMI box, but the Keydet goalkeeper dove to her right to make the save.

Kandel took a shot at the final buzzer, but the shot sailed wide.

After 90 minutes of action, the teams were tied at 0-0.

VMI struck for 27 total shots in regulation, which included 13 shots on frame. O'Malley saved all shots on frame to keep the Keydets off the scoreboard after 90 minutes of play.

In the first overtime session, the Keydets took five total shots with three coming in the first four minutes of the period. However, none of the attempts found the net.

With 32 seconds left in the first overtime period, VMI's Sarita Walters connected with a shot, but yet again, O'Malley made the save to keep the game level, 0-0.

For the final overtime period, Alice Walker put a shot on goal in the 108th minute, but the shot was saved.

After several substitutions, both squads settled with a 0-0 tie.

O'Malley finished the contest with 17 total saves. Overall she faced 32 shots, and with keeping VMI off the scoreboard, it marked the first shutout of her career.

Offensively, Asheville took nine total shots and put four on goal. Kandel ended the contest as the Bulldogs' leader in total shots with four.
