BULLDOG BITES
About UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs enter Wednesday's game with a 1-3-2 overall mark and a 1-0-1 mark in the last two contests.
In the last contest, UNC Asheville grinded out a 0-0 tie with VMI, and two matches ago, the Bulldogs claimed their first victory of the season with a 3-2 win over The Citadel at Greenwood Field.
Most recently, freshman goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley garnered her first-ever weekly award, as she was tabbed the Big South Defensive Player of the Week two weeks ago. In the lone game of that week (VMI), O'Malley corralled 17 total saves and faced 32 total shots. The 17 saves marked the most by a Big South goalkeeper since the 2013 season. She was also just three saves away from matching a UNC Asheville record that was set by Tracy Brainard during the 1992 campaign.
In the 3-2 victory over The Citadel, UNC Asheville saw season highs in goals scored, assists (3), shots (15) and shots on goal (6). Skyler Chillson, Gillian Oyos and Emily Duenas all netted their first goal of the season, while Kyra Kandel, Maya Gutman and Duenas all tallied their first assist of the year.
On the year, Duenas and Oyos pace the squad offensively, as both have three points. Chillson and James are right behind their teammates, as they both have two points.
Defensively, the Bulldogs have been stout. In 580 minutes of action in six games, Asheville has an impressive 0.93 goals against average. Leading the goalkeeping trio is O'Malley. The Cumming, Ga. native has 23 total saves, a 0.41 goals against average and the lone shutout of the season.
Scouting Longwood
Longwood enters the mid-week contest with a 2-4-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark inside the confines of the Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va.
The Lancers are 1-2 in their last three games, which includes a 6-0 loss to Wake Forest on the road. The Lancers were supposed to open the conference season on the road at High Point on Sept. 15, but due to Hurricane Florence the game was forced to be postponed to a later date.
In its two wins on the year, Longwood has out-scored its opposition, 8-4 (Richmond and Howard).
Three Lancers have two goals this year – Kelly Almeida, Carrie Reaver and Paige Robertson. Emily Rothersbeugh is the team's leader in assists, as she has a pair.
Between the posts, Madison van Dyke has started all seven matches and has totaled 643 minutes. She has a 1.82 goals against average, a .698 save percentage and allowed 13 goals.
Last Time Out Versus the Lancers
The last time the Bulldogs and Lancers squared off was last year during the regular season. Longwood claimed the 3-1 victory over Asheville at Greenwood Field. In that head-to-head contest, the Bulldogs ripped 17 total shots, including seven on frame. Caroline Houser was the only Bulldog to score, as she netted the team's lone goal in the 86th minute.
