Bulldogs Split Doubleheader at Presbyterian, Claim Series with 7-1 Win in Finale

03.25.2017 | Baseball

CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team claimed a Big South Conference series with Presbyterian Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs split their doubleheader at the PC Baseball Complex. The Blue Hose claimed the day's first game 7-4 with the Bulldogs bouncing back for a 7-1 win the finale.

The Bulldogs (10-12, 3-3 Big South) recorded 17 hits between Saturday's two games while the Blue Hose (12-14, 1-2 Big South) registered 23. Over the three-game series, UNC Asheville out-scored Presbyterian 15-10.

Game 1: PC 7, AVL 4
Presbyterian eased out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of the day's first game with a sacrifice fly, but UNC Asheville was able to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth with three runs. Joe Zayatz scored first for the Bulldogs off a groundout by Danny Wilson. Two batters later, Justin Woods hit a single up the middle that scored seniors Joe Tietjen and Kyle Carruthers.

The Blue Hose answered in the bottom of the inning with a four-spot to retake the lead for good, including a three-RBI double.

UNC Asheville was able to get a run back to pull within one in the top of the sixth, but the Blue Hose added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to even the weekend series and set up a crucial rubber game.

Zayatz, Woods and Andrew Friedholm all collected multiple hits in the game with Zayatz going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Both Woods and Friedholm went 2-for-4.

Spencer Orr (1-2) pitched the first 6.2 innings for UNC Asheville, striking out five batters. Jesse Juday came on for the final just over one inning. Hayden Deal (2-2) earned his second win of the season in 7.1 innings of work while Ryan Dedrick pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his third save of the season.

Game 2: AVL 7, PC 1
UNC Asheville wasted little time in the second game, scoring three runs in the first two innings to edge out to a 3-0 lead. In the first inning, Zayatz scored when Woods drew a bases-loaded walk. During the next at-bat, Brandon Lankford scored when the Presbyterian catcher made a throwing error. In the top of the second, Kole Harris led things off by ripping his first collegiate home run. The freshman's homer came on the third pitch of his at-bat.

The Bulldogs added a single run in the top of the fifth when Tietjen hit his fourth home run of the season, pulling him to within one homer of the top-10 in program history.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the scoring drive in the top of the sixth with a three-spot that started when Joe Gruszka crossed the plate thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Tietjen. On the next at-bat, Wilson sent a rocket of a double down the left field line, scoring Carmine Pagano and Zayatz to set the score at 7-0.

Presbyterian avoided being shut out with a single run in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to manage any more.

Tietjen followed up his multi-hit first game with another two hits in game-two. Tietjen and Wilson both had two RBIs in the second game.

Freshman lefty Greg Gasparro (1-1) earned his first-career collegiate win as he pitched 7.0 innings of scoreless ball while striking out five batters. Eric Whitecavage and Nick Boyles pitched the final two innings. Tanner Chock (0-4) was saddled with the loss for PC as he gave up four runs, three earned, five hits and four walks.

BULLDOG BITES
BIG SOUTH SERIES WIN: The series win over the Blue Hose was the first for the Bulldogs since last season's squad defeated Charleston Southern on the road April 15-17.It is also the quickest that a Bulldog team has picked up its first league series win since the 2014 squad defeated Gardner-Webb in the second Big South Conference series of the season.

CLOSING IN: With his home run in the top of the sixth inning of game-two on Saturday, Joe Tietjen moved to within one home run of breaking into the top-10 in program history for career home runs at UNC Asheville.

FIRST CAREER HOME RUN: Kole Harris blasted his first career home run to lead off the second inning of Saturday's second game. He became the fourth Bulldog to register his first collegiate home run this season, joining Brandon Lankford, Jake Madole and Tyler Serricchio in the honor.

UP NEXT
UNC Asheville will play two midweek games next week, beginning with a Tuesday, March 28, road trip to UNCG. The Bulldogs and Spartans will begin at 6 p.m. The next day, UNC Asheville will return to Asheville for their annual Vs. Cancer Game at McCormick Field. This season, the game will be against Western Carolina and will feature a 5 p.m. first pitch.

QUOTABLES
"I thought we did a great job on the mound all day today. If you look at the numbers, we only gave up one earned run in 18 innings. Both of our starters and our bullpen did a great job. In the first game, defensively we let it get away a little bit, and I think the big difference in game-two was we played solid defense and made big plays when we needed to. Offensively, I thought we did well all day long with Joe Tietjen and Danny Wilson coming up with big hits and Joe Zayatz gave us great plate appearances in his first offensive start in some time." - Scott Friedholm
