Baseball Falls 14-3 at UNCG in Midweek Game

03.28.2017 | Baseball

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a non-conference road game 14-3 at UNCG Tuesday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. It was the first of two midweek games for the Bulldogs this week and was the fourth game in a row on the road.

The Spartans (16-9) started the game by scoring the first nine runs in the first three innings, including a solo home run in the bottom of the first, three runs in the second and five in the third.

Joe Zayatz broke up Dan Loats' no-hitter in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff home run off the scoreboard in left field. It was the second home run of Zayatz's career at UNC Asheville (10-13). Later in the inning, Justin Woods hit a two-out single through the left side to score Brandon Lankford and set the score at 9-2.

UNCG put up another run in the bottom of the fourth and the Bulldogs followed suit in the top of the fifth when Lankford showed patience at the plate to draw a bases-loaded walk with two outs to push fellow freshman Joe Gruszka home and set the score at 10-3.

UNCG scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth, pushing the advantage out to the final 14-3 over the Bulldogs.

Six different Bulldogs combined for UNC Asheville's six hits in the game, including Zayatz, Danny Wilson, Kyle Carruthers, Woods, Andrew Friedholm and Kole Harris.

On the mound, Austin Fahr (0-1) pitched the first three innings for UNC Asheville while Loats started the game for UNCG. Loats pitched 4.2 innings, giving way to Alex Sova (1-0) who came on to record his first decision of the season. Fahr, Ryan Tapp, Jesse Juday and Blake Brown combined to walk just one batter while the Spartans' five pitchers walked seven.

BULLDOG BITES
BREAKING UP THE NO-NO: Joe Zayatz ripped his first home run of the season and the second of his career in the top of the fourth inning, Tuesday night. The tater off the UNCG scoreboard broke up a no-hitter for UNCG's starting pitcher. Zayatz has now scored four runs as the Bulldogs' designated hitter in the last three games.

BULLDOGS VS. CANCER GAME: The UNC Asheville baseball team will hold its annual Vs. Cancer Game this Wednesday, March 29, at McCormick Field in downtown Asheville. The annual event will feature the Bulldogs taking on the Catamounts of Western Carolina at 5 p.m. Donations will be collected prior to and during the game and sent to the Vs. Cancer Foundation to help battle childhood cancer. In the four years that UNC Asheville has been working with Vs. Cancer, the Bulldogs have raised nearly $24,000. This season, the Bulldogs are aiming to raise $10,000 for the worthy cause and currently have just shy of $8,500 raised. As part of the evening's events, members of the UNC Asheville baseball team and coaching staff will have their heads shaved following the game in support of the cause.

A+ YOUTH NIGHT WEDNESDAY: Wednesday night, any student who received a youth ticket from a Buncombe, Henderson or Watauga county school will be admitted to the game for free. Students who received the tickets were recognized for perfect attendance, perfect grades or exemplary citizenship as defined by their school.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs return home to Asheville for another midweek game, this one at McCormick Field. UNC Asheville will welcome Western Carolina to town for a 5 p.m. game at the home of the Asheville Tourists in downtown Asheville. The game will also serve as the Bulldogs' Vs. Cancer Game as the Bulldogs work to strike out childhood cancer.

QUOTABLES
"We need to do a better job on the mound in the early parts of these midweek games. We are getting into too big of a hole to climb out of. I thought our bullpen did a decent job over the last six innings. Offensively, we struck out too many times tonight and didn't put any pressure on UNCG. We need to put this one behind us, forget about it and get ready to play Western Carolina tomorrow." - Scott Friedholm
