Bulldogs Take Game-One Over Presbyterian 4-2

03.24.2017 | Baseball

CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team opened a three-game Big South Conference series with Presbyterian Friday afternoon by defeating the Blue Hose 4-2 at the Blue Hose Baseball Complex.

The Bulldogs (9-11, 2-2 Big  South) struck quickly in the top of the first inning as Joe Tietjen rounded third and scored as the Presbyterian shortstop overthrew first while trying to throw Danny Wilson out.

The lead lasted until the bottom of the second when the Blue Hose (11-13, 0-1 Big South) pulled off a double steal.

The game progressed scoreless as Brandon Harris and the PC starter proceeded to bend but not break.

In the top of the eighth inning, Tietjen started the scoring drive off with a two-out single up the middle and then advanced to second on a PC error. After Wilson was hit by a pitch, Brandon Lankford ripped a two-out single up the middle, scoring Tietjen to break the 1-1 tie. On the next at-bat, Kyle Carruthers singled to right field, scoring both Wilson and Lankford, setting the score at 4-1.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs turned to Justin Woods to preserve the win on the mound. Woods and the Bulldog defense surrendered one run to the Blue Hose and then slammed the door shut.

Tietjen, Wilson and Carruthers all recorded multiple hits in the game with Tietjen leading the way with two runs scored.

Presbyterian had five different players record a hit in the game.

On the mound, Harris (3-1) secured his third win of the season in seven innings of work. He gave up just two hits and one run while striking out five batters. Woods earned his fourth save of the season as he pitched the final frame. Eric Whitecavage pitched the eighth inning.

Hunter Kyzar (0-3) was saddled with the loss in two innings of work that saw him give up the final three runs. Starter Brian Kehner pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters.

BULLDOG BITES
TOMORROW'S STARTERS: UNC Asheville will turn to freshman Greg Gasparro to start the game tomorrow while Presbyterian will send Tanner Chock to the mound.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs and Blue Hose will continue the series tomorrow, Saturday, March 25, with a 2 p.m. first pitch.

QUOTABLES
"Good pitching, two-out hits and good defense will give you a chance to win ballgames every day. Brandon Harris was tremendous for us on the mound today. Joe Tietjen, Danny Wilson, Brandon Lankford and Kyle Carruthers all came up big with two-out at-bats. But it's time to forget about this game and focus on tomorrow." - Scott Friedholm
