UNC Asheville will host Family Day and a Camper Reunion where the athletic department encourages families and former women's basketball campers to come watch the double header on Sunday. The women's basketball game tips at 1 p.m. with the men's basketball team starting at approximately 3:30 p.m. as it hosts Milligan for a non-conference bout.
About UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs pulled off their first victory of the season on Monday, Dec. 4 as they routed Warren Wilson 100-53 inside Kimmel Arena. UNC Asheville also set a new attendance mark as there were 2,878 fans to watch the game on Education Day. Khaila Webb led the Bulldogs with 18 points, which marks the fifth time this season the senior has led the team in points scored in a game. Bronaza Fitzgerald tallied a double-double as she knocked down 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds versus the Owls, which was her seventh of her career and second straight game in a row. Zip Scott, who broke her single game career high at Wofford, broke her single-game best again as she recorded 12 points versus the Owls. Jessica Wall was the fourth Bulldog to post double-digits with 11 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs have scored 129 points (18.4 points average). The closest total to that is in the third quarter as Asheville has totaled 106. As a team, the Bulldogs are shooting .447 (46-for-103) including posting six more steals than opponents along with 11 fewer turnovers. The Bulldogs have also grabbed nine more total rebounds and 14 more offensive boards than opponents in the fourth quarter (27-13).
Fitzgerald has the highest points per game on the squad in the fourth quarter as she has totaled 3.5 ppg (21 total points). Webb is right behind her with a 3.1 ppg average for 22 total points, and Wall has accrued 21 points as all of those points have come by means of a three pointer for the junior. Scott has scored 12 of her 23 total points this season in the fourth quarter. Fitzgerald paces the Bulldogs in total rebounds with 15, but Alexis Toney and Juliet Esadah have grabbed nine rebounds in the final 10 minutes.
At the Big South Conference Media Day, the Bulldogs were selected to finish fifth, despite receiving the second-highest amount of first-place votes in the league. Radford earned seven of the total first-place votes as the Highlanders were selected the win the league.
UNC Asheville opens its conference portion of the schedule on Jan. 2 at Campbell followed by the conference home opener on Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. versus High Point.
Scouting Mercer
In the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, the Bears (7-2) are ranked 14th in the country as they have been ranked in the poll every week this season. Mercer is one of two Southern Conference teams on the top 25 ranking with Chattanooga being ranked 10th with a 6-3 record.
Entering Sunday's game, Mercer has won four straight. It started the season winning its first two games on the road as it downed UCF by nine points and upended Florida Atlantic by 11 points. The Bears have an unblemished 3-0 mark on the road with its most recent road victory coming at Campbell as they snuck out with a one-point victory (58-57) over the Camels.
Kahlia Lawrence was recently named the November SoCon Player of the Month. The senior guard averaged 19.3 points per game while guiding the Bears to a 5-2 record in November. She also grabbed 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per outing. Overall this season, Lawrence leads the team in field goals made (64), free throws made (24), total points (158) and scoring average (17.6).
Earlier this year Sydni Means was named to the 20-candidate watch list for the 2018 Nancy Lieberman Award, which recognizes the nation's top point guard in women's basketball. Last season, Means averaged 10.9 points per game and 6.8 assists along with a 3.54 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranked third in the country. This season, Means has totaled the most minutes on the squad (317 minutes) as she has started all nine contests. She averages 9.0 ppg to go along with a team-leading 25 steals, 63 assists and 7.0 assists per contest.
In the Preseason Coaches Poll, Mercer was selected to win the SoCon after posting a 25-7 season in 2016-17 where it also earned a bid to the WNIT to conclude its season.
