Game Highlights
Neither team could find much offense in the first 20 minutes as UNC Asheville led Charlotte 20-18 heading into halftime. Five Bulldogs scored at least two points in the first two quarters as senior guard Khaila Webb led the way with eight points. Bronaza Fitzgerald and Nadiria Evans were second on the squad as each had four points in the same timeframe.
For Charlotte, two 49ers were carrying most of the workload in the first 20 minutes as Amaya Ransom and Laia Raventos combined for 12 of the team's 18 points.
Both teams combined for 15-for-52 in the first two quarters as Webb and Ransom combined for seven of the total baskets made.
The second half started off fast for Asheville as its lead went as high as five points. However, the 49ers started to surge as they went on a 17-4 run to conclude the third quarter. Leading the comeback was Raventos as she dropped seven of the team's 17 points in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter added some drama as both team's offenses started to find a rhythm. The 49ers started to see their lead dwindle at the 6:55 mark as sophomore Juliet Esadah knocked down a layup to pull the deficit to eight points. Following two jumpers from Ali Trani and Fitzgerald the margin was cut to two points with Charlotte ahead.
With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Raventos knocked down a heart-breaker as she scored a three-pointer to give her squad a five-point advantage.
Down five points and with just a minute remaining, Asheville needed to force a turnover, and Charlotte's Octavia Wilson mistakenly threw the ball out of bounds to give the Bulldogs life. Jessica Wall made it hurt as she knocked down Asheville's first three-pointer of the game and brought the deficit to a pair.
Charlotte ran the clocked down to 22 seconds, and Raventos nailed a long jump shot to make it a two possession game. Wall made the game interesting two seconds later as she tallied a three-pointer to make it a 48-47 game with Charlotte leading.
The Bulldogs immediately fouled, and Ransom went to the line to shoot with 14 seconds left. She missed the first shot and made the second to pull ahead by two points.
After making changes on the court, Webb was given a wide-open look at a three-pointer, but it didn't fall as the 49ers secured the victory after making a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
Eight different Bulldogs recorded at least two points as Webb led the team with 10 points for the third consecutive game this season. She also led the squad with seven board, which marks the first time this season. Fitzgerald totaled a season-high nine points, and Wall scored eight points with six of those coming in the final minute of the game.
Asheville played defensively strong as it totaled seven steals.
The Bulldogs drop to 0-3 on the year, while the 49ers advance to 2-2.
Quotable
"I am really proud of the girls today. I thought they played hard and determined, but we didn't play smart in terms of coverages or execution. However, we did stay consistent with our energy and effort throughout the game. It was a grind-it-out kind of basketball game tonight between two competitive and athletic ball clubs that were battling to see who could make a shot. This game was about who was going to capitalize at the end and do the little things correctly at the end of the game."
