THE TURNING POINT
Leading by four runs in the sixth, Gardner-Webb used a pair of two-run home runs in the frame to extend the lead for good despite four late runs by Asheville.
NOTABLES
-Asheville was led at the plate by Pete Guy's 2-for-4 night, including his two-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the seventh inning and a double in the second frame. Guy did not record a walk for the third game in a row – just the second time all season he's gone this long without a walk (other – Feb. 20/21 Ohio, Feb. 26 Monmouth). The hits did push his on-base streak to 33 consecutive games.
-Danny Wilson finished with one hit, a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning, while Joe Tietjen (0-5) and Michael Kelly (0-0) each notched an RBI. Lucas Owens, Kyle Carruthers (double) and Derek Smith added the other Bulldog hits.
-Wilson was saddled with his third loss of the season after allowing four runs on five hits in two innings, while reliever Spencer Orr allowed six runs on five hits in four innings of work. Seniors Parker Swindell and Lucas Clarke also logged innings, combining for the final three frames.
-Asheville jumped on the board in the bottom of the first when walks to Owens and Carmine Pagano were cashed in on Wilson's two-run single back up the middle for the early advantage. Gardner-Webb responded with four runs in the top of the second inning to take a lead it would never surrender, using a two doubles to plate three runs and adding the fourth via an Asheville error.
-The visitors added single runs in the third, on a solo home run, and in the fourth, via a wild pitch, to extend the advantage.
-The sixth inning for Gardner-Webb opened with a single before the first two-run homer of the frame, followed later in the inning by a hit batter and the second two-run homer of the inning to push the lead to eight runs.
-Asheville's response came in the bottom of the seventh when Smith singled back up the middle and Guy followed him up with his two-run home run to left-center field to cut into the deficit. After Gardner-Webb added its final run in the top of the ninth, via an RBI single, Asheville's last effort came in the bottom of the ninth. Kelly drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the first run, while Tietjen's fielder's choice groundout brought in the second run. The Bulldogs left two men on base to end the night.
