THE TURNING POINT

In the opener, Winthrop plated five runs over the final three innings to gain breathing room in what had been a two-run game, while the second game saw the Asheville load the bases down by three in the bottom of the ninth before the visitors shut the door and sealed the doubleheader wins.

NOTABLES

-Pete Guy finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with two doubles, a pair of home runs and two RBI. He accounted for three of Asheville's four total runs and also drew a walk in the first game – his national-leading 47th of the season – as he extended his on-base streak to 25 consecutive games.

-Justin Woods finished with three hits, including two in game one and a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning of game two, as he collected two RBI via a solo home run and a single in the opening game.

-Lucas Owens also tallied three hits, as he, Guy and Woods combined for 10 of Asheville's 17 total hits across the doubleheader.

-Bulldog starter Jordan Carr allowed five runs on seven hits in the opener, tossing 6 2/3 innings before being saddled with the loss, while starter Danny Wilson took the loss in game two after allowing three runs in three innings in game two.

-In the opener, Asheville scored first in the bottom of the first inning on Woods' RBI single up the middle after Guy (double) and Owens began the frame with back-to-back hits. The Bulldogs left the bases loaded to end the first, and then saw Winthrop score a single run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

-The visitors plated two runs in the third, via a two-out double, to take the lead before an RBI groundout in the fourth extended their lead. Wood's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth cut the Winthrop lead to two runs, and the score remained that way until the seventh when the visitors connected for a solo home run of their own.

-Winthrop used a pair of two-out hits to add two runs in the eighth and then used a sacrifice fly and an error to score the final two runs of the opening game in the top of the ninth.

-The second game again saw the Bulldogs score first, this time with Guy's solo home run to straight away center field to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Winthrop took the lead with three runs in the third inning, including two with two outs, before adding a single run in the fourth on an RBI groundout.

-Guy's second homer of the game came in the bottom of the fifth, a no-doubter that cleared the scoreboard in left-center field, but the Bulldogs would get no closer. Winthrop scored its final run in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI single before Asheville made it interesting in the ninth.

-In the bottom of the ninth, Woods opened the frame with his pinch-hit single before a pair of outs. Owens singled to extend the inning for Erik Connolly, who notched a pinch-hit single of his own to load the bases with two outs for Joe Tietjen, who struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the afternoon.
