Early Runs Lead Asheville to Sunday Victory over Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville scored nine of the first 11 runs on Sunday afternoon and held off a late comeback attempt from Winthrop to grab a 10-7 Big South Conference series win in the teams' weekend finale and avoid being swept following Winthrop's Saturday wins.
THE TURNING POINT
Pete Guy and Danny Wilson combined for four hits and drove in six RBI to pace the Asheville offense. The pair drove in all four runs in the Asheville fourth inning, with Guy connecting for a two-run homer and Wilson delivering a two-run single back up the middle.
NOTABLES
-Guy finished 2-for-4 with the three RBI and his third homer of the series, while extending his on-base streak to 26 games in the win. He also drew a walk to lead off the third inning, keeping pace at the top of the national category with his 48th base on balls of the season.
-Wilson also finished 2-for-4 with a walk and his three RBI, while Joe Tietjen notched three hits and an RBI of his own. Derek Smith (hit) and Michael Kelly also drove in runs for Asheville.
-Bulldog starter Jordan Fulbright earned his fourth win of the season, tossing six innings and striking out seven batters while allowing four runs on seven hits.
-Both teams plated runs in the second inning, beginning with Winthrop's sacrifice fly in the top of the frame before Asheville tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Kelly's sacrifice fly.
-The Bulldogs plated four runs on four hits in the third inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Kyle Carruthers and RBI singles from Tietjen and Smith. Winthrop added one run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run before Asheville posted four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, this time spearheaded by Guy's two-run homer and a two-run single from Wilson.
-Winthrop's comeback effort included two runs in both the sixth and seventh, via a two-run double, RBI single and a Bulldog error, before Asheville scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on Guy's RBI single down the right field line. The Bulldogs did leave the bases loaded to end the inning, leaving the door cracked for Winthrop in the ninth.
-Asheville tallied two errors in the top of the ninth, including a miscommunication on a two-out popup that allowed the run to score, before closing the night out and stranding two final Winthrop batters.
UP NEXT
-Following today's win, the Bulldogs have a nine-day break to wrap up final classes and exams before getting back into action on the road May 3 at Charlotte. Asheville returns home May 4 when they host Wofford at Greenwood Field.
