ASHEVILLE – The UNC Asheville Women's Basketball team defeated Longwood by 39 points in a regular season Big South Conference game at home in Kimmel Arena.

 

THE TURNING POINT

Asheville started strong, jumping out to a commanding 21-2 lead. With help from four three-pointers from Tianna Knuckles, the Bulldogs produced their largest first half scoring margin of the season (54-17), which they would build on for the remainder of the game. 

 

NOTABLES

-The Bulldogs shot 52.6 percent on the evening, well above their season average of 43.7 percent. Asheville was led by Knuckles with 14 points and three rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Chatori Major with 12 points and Khaila Webb with 11 points.

 

-Asheville came out hot, scoring 32 points in the first quarter. This is the Bulldog's highest scoring first quarter this season, topping their previous best against Warren Wilson (27 points). 

 

-The Bulldog defense held Longwood to only 17 first half points. This is the least amount of points allowed in the first two quarters by the Bulldogs this season.

 

-Asheville took advantage of their offensive depth and produced 33 points off of the bench. Ten Bulldogs contributed at least three points to the Bulldogs' 39-point win.

 

-Asheville scored 26 points off of 16 Lancer turnovers.The Bulldogs also picked off 5 steals in the conference win.

 

QUOTABLES FROM HEAD COACH BRENDA MOCK KIRKPATRICK

On the Win- "I was pleased with the determination our girls started with on the defensive side of the ball. We also were hitting shots early which always helps matters with this team. I saw some growth from the Charleston Southern game and was particularly happy that we were able to get into our bench and get some game experience for people who have been working hard in practice."

 

On Longwood- "Longwood had some injuries and illness which was unfortunate for them. It will be a different challenge when we travel to Farmville for the return game. They have some capable weapons that were not able to play tonight. We need to clean some things up from tonight's second half in order to have an opportunity on Saturday versus Gardner-Webb."

 

UP NEXT

-Following Tuesday night's game, Asheville will host Gardner-Webb on Saturday, January 16 at 2:00 p.m. as the first part of a doubleheader. The UNC Asheville Men's basketball team will also host the Runnin' Bulldogs immediately following the Women's game at 4:30 p.m.
