Women's Basketball Welcomes Leah Metcalf as new Assistant Coach

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball welcomes Leah Metcalf as the program's new Assistant Coach, announced today (Thursday, Sept. 24) by Head Coach Tynesha Lewis.

Metcalf spent last season as an Assistant Coach and the Recruiting Coordinator at Fordham, after being elevated from Assistant Coach and Director of Operations after the 2024-25 season.

"Leah is a great hire for our program," said Coach Lewis. "She understands what it takes to compete at the highest levels and her knowledge of the game, passion for player development and commitment to building meaningful recruiting relationships will elevate our program."

Prior to Fordham, she was briefly the interim head coach at Charlotte after being elevated from her Director of Scouting and Recruiting role during the 2023-24 season. Metcalf was previously the head girls basketball coach at Charlotte Christian School from 2021-23 and was an assistant coach in 2020-21.

Metcalf played 13 professional seasons across Europe and Australia from 2007-20, where she was a four-time Most Valuable Player for top division teams. Metcalf was also a four-year starter at the University of North Carolina, scoring over 1,000 career points and dishing out over 500 assists in her career. Her accolades in a Tar Heel uniform include being the ACC's Preseason Rookie of the Year in 2001-02 and an All-ACC Freshman Team selection in that same season. She was also an ACC Tournament Team selection in 2003 and a Team Captain from 2003-05. She was a member of the All-ACC Academic Team all four years and also received the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete award in 2005. She was a member of a 2002 NCAA Sweet 16 team, and an ACC Championship team in 2005 that reached the Elite Eight.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining forces with Coach Lewis and her staff at UNC Asheville," said Metcalf. "From her playing days at NC State and the Charlotte Sting, to transitioning into a head coaching role, I've admired her journey and character from afar. I'm looking forward to getting to work and helping to lead and guide our student-athletes as they develop on and off the court. I'm excited to be close to home as well."
