ASHEVILLE – The UNC Asheville Women's Basketball team came up short in their effort to hold off Gardner-Webb University, falling to the Runnin' Bulldogs 58-56. This puts Asheville at 6-2 in the Big South Conference.
THE TURNING POINT
Asheville and Gardner-Webb remained tied for ten full minutes when the Bulldogs took a five-point lead with 2:24 left to play. Gardner-Webb tied the game up with 56 seconds left to play. The Runnin' Bulldogs pulled down a rebound from a missed Asheville shot attempt and scored a quick layup to give them a two-point victory.
NOTABLES
-Asheville shot 40 percent as a team on the afternoon. The Bulldogs were led by Tianna Knuckles with 18 points. Knuckles was the only Bulldog to score in the fourth quarter, knocking down 13 of her 18 points in the last 10 minutes.
-The Bulldogs pulled 31 rebounds off the glass to GWU's 40. Asheville was able to turn 13 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points. The Bulldogs were led by Tiffany Wilson with seven boards.
- Asheville took advantage of their offensive depth, producing 19 points off their bench to Gardner-Webb's one bench point.
-The Bulldogs won the battle of turnovers, forcing 19 GWU turnovers that led to 18 Asheville points. Asheville gave up only 13 turnovers that led to 11 Gardner-Webb points.
-This afternoon's showdown featured seven lead changes and 12 tie scores. Asheville led for the majority of the game at 20:27, GWU led for 9:27 and the score was tied for 10:06.
