Asheville Defeats High Point to Stay Number One in the Big South

HIGH POINT – The UNC Asheville Women's Basketball team came back from a 14-point deficit in the first half to overcome High Point on the road 82-81.
The Bulldogs move to 7-2 in Big South Conference play and remain tied for first place with Gardner-Webb University and Presbyterian College who also picked up conference wins today.
THE TURNING POINT
Asheville took the lead with 3:20 left to play in the fourth quarter. They would hold onto that lead until an and-one from High Point's Kat Harris that would tie the game up at 81 with 13 seconds remaining. Asheville's Khaila Webb was fouled on the next possession with five seconds on the clock. Webb knocked down her first free throw to give Asheville the 82-81 advantage. Webb missed her second shot and Asheville held the ball until the final horn.
NOTABLES
-Asheville shot 54 percent as a team on the evening. Chatori Major led the team with 25 points, which is just shy of her career-high (28 points). Tianna Knuckles and Bree Fitzgerald also achieved double-digits with 16 points for Knuckles and 12 for Fitzgerald.
-The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Panthers 38 to 31. Asheville pulled down 16 boards off of the offensive glass and recovered 22 defensive rebounds as a team. Tiffany Wilson and Bree Fitzgerald controlled the glass for Asheville with eight rebounds each.
- Asheville saw the return of their leading rebounder, K.J. Weaver for the first time since a wrist injury that occurred on December 18 against Furman University. Weaver chipped in five points and four rebounds in 11 minutes played.
-The Bulldogs only controlled the lead for 25 percent of the game, with their largest lead of the night being four points (35-31) at the end of the first half.
-Asheville continued to show their offensive depth by out-producing High Point's bench 20 points to 12.
