ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sophomore Caroline Houser's 71st minute goal proved to be the game-winner as the UNC Asheville women's soccer team opened Big South Conference play with a 1-0 victory on the road at Winthrop on Wednesday night.
THE TURNING POINT
A back-and-forth contest throughout, Caroline Houser used a touch pass from Zoe Lewis and drilled her goal from dead on into the lower corner to give Asheville the lead it would never give up.
NOTABLES
-Asheville was outshot 13-7 overall, but the Bulldogs saw six of their seven shots go on goal and challenge Winthrop keeper Karly Gustafson.
-Caroline Houser's goal was her only shot of the night. Sister Emma and Paige Trent each recorded two shots, while Caroline, Justine James and Zoe Lewis each notched one shot.
-Bulldog goalkeeper Lily Brown recorded seven saves on the way to earning her second win in as many starts Wednesday. Asheville has now had three goalkeepers record at least two victories.
-The Bulldogs have now opened Big South play with victories the last three seasons.
-Asheville's win snaps a six-match losing streak in the series with Winthrop. The Bulldogs now lead the all-time series 9-7-1.
