BURLINGTON, VT – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team battled to a 1-1, double overtime draw against the University of Vermont Friday afternoon, their first of two games in Vermont this weekend. The Bulldogs scored first on Zach Joens' goal in the 18th minute, but saw the hosts answer back with a goal of their own in the 26th minute.

THE TURNING POINT

Asheville goalkeeper Zak Davis held Vermont out of the back of the net for the final 84 minutes of the match, finishing with nine saves as the Bulldogs faced 18 Vermont shots and seven corner kicks.

NOTABLES

-Zach Joens now has three of the five Asheville goals this season after entering 2015 with zero career goals. Joens' shot and goal was one of only two Asheville shots on goal in the match.

-Davis and the Bulldogs defended against nine of Vermont's 18 total shots in the second half to push the game into the two overtime periods.

-This is the first time Asheville has ever started a season 3-0-1.

QUOTABLES

“I was really proud of our performance. We didn't arrive in Burlington until 24 hours after leaving Asheville (due to travel issues), so for our guys to turn around, score a good goal and take the game to Vermont and put forth that type effort, I couldn't be prouder. College soccer isn't always going to be pretty, but you have to find a way to get through it. This is a great statement about where we are getting to as a program. We have an excellent opportunity to play a very good New Hampshire on Sunday and continue to move forward.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell

UP NEXT
