Campbell Slips Past Women's Hoops, 56-51

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Shonese Jones scored a game-high 20 points but it wasn't enough as Campbell slipped past UNC Asheville, 56-51 in Big South Conference action at Kimmel Arena Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs (7-18, 6-10 BSC) trailed by 14 in the first half and by 10 in the second before roaring back but poor shooting, especially from the free throw line doomed the Blue & White. Asheville went 9-of-20 for the game from the charity stripe for 45 percent.
Campbell was led by RaeChaun Edwards with 16 points. Summer Leverette added 14 points and seven rebounds. Keira Gaines finished with 15 points.
The Bulldogs had Jeanne Buckner collect 12 rebounds, while Brittany Gwyn contributed eight rebounds and five assists.
Campbell led 49-39 with 5:00 remaining. Jones scored seven quick points to narrow the lead to 49-46. The Bulldogs had chances to get even closer but missed three free throws and trailed 51-48 at the 1:32 mark.
Gaines hit two free throws with 47 seconds left to push the lead to 53-48. Jones sank a long trey to carve the lead to 53-51 with 39 seconds left.
Asheville chose not to foul and Edwards had her shot blocked by KJ Weaver at the 10-second mark. With two seconds on the shot clock, Edwards found Summer Price on the inbounds play. She sank the Camels only three-pointer in the second half to seal the Campbell victory at 56-51.
In the first half, Campbell went 5-of-12 from beyond the arc to build an early lead. The Bulldogs were ice cold from the field as the visitors led 24-10 midway through the opening half. Asheville rallied by scoring the final seven points of the game to close to 29-23 at halftime
For the game, Asheville shot just 32 percent (18-of-55) from the field. Campbell wasn't much better as the Bulldog defense limited the Camels to 34 percent shooting (19-of-56) from the field. CU shot just 29 percent (9-of-31) in the second half.
UNC Asheville has the week off and plays next at High Point next Tuesday (Feb. 17) night at 7 p.m.
